Shots are usually a stronger percentage and thicker / denser form of alcohol,
as there is less in a shot glass than a cup or glass, people are more likely to
drink a comparable quantity in one "shot" or "gulp".

Because you're drinking the shot in one gulp instead of slowly drinking the alcohol. You're also drinking it much faster. Therefor, you get drunk faster.
