Ethanol (the sort of alcohol in beer, wine and spirits) has boiling and freezing points lower than water!.

Ethanol boils at 78!.4° Celsius, while (as you doubtless know) water boils at 100°C!. This is how distillation works: a liquid containing alcohol is heated to a point above 78!.4° C but less than 100° C so that alcohol vapour is produced, this condensing into liquid alcohol when it is cooled!.

Putting an alcoholic drink in a freezer will result in the water freezing, but the alcohol remaining liquid since ethanol freezes at -114° C (water, as you doubtless also know, freezes at 0° C)!.

Ethanol cannot evaporate away at the temperatures in a domestic freezer since these are generally in the region of -18° C!.

While I've not tried it, I have heard that it is possible to obtain a higher alcohol content drink from an alcoholic spirit using a freezer!. Supposedly, if one puts a bottle of, say, vodka in a freezer where it can sit vertically and then periodically (say every 15 minutes) opens the freezer and spins the bottle on its vertical axis, the water ice crystals which form will be forced to the outside wall of the bottle!. After some time, you're supposed to end up with a bottle containing a hollow cylinder of water ice with more or less pure alcohol in the centre!.

In theory, it sounds like this should work!. Whether or not it does in the real world I cannot say!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Alcohol only evaporates at higher temperatures, not freezing!. But whatever the alcohol is mixed with will freeze!. If you don't thaw all of the drink completely you will drink the alcohol first and the flavor last!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
