I agree with 1st poster, it is impossible to slaughter something alive because by definition the animal is killed when slaughtered!.
That cow was killed quickly and humanely, and lived a great life with all the food, warmth, and shelter it could ever want!. Surely it lived a better life than any cow could ever hope to live in the wild!. The restraining device is to ensure that non of the workers get hurt by a 500 lb giant animal!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

In United States, the animal is stunned befaore slaughtered except for Halal or Kosher!. After the animal has been stunned, it feels no pain!. The neck is normally chopped off intantaneously, this is called slaughtering!. Slaughtering means killing the animal!. After the animal has been slaughtered, butchers take over to harvest various types of meats from the slaughtered animal!.
A dead animal can not be slaughtered by US laws, Kosher laws Halal laws or Jhatka laws!. The animal must be alive and well with no diseases before it is slaughtered!.

Cows, sheep and pigs are stunned (with electricity) to knock them out before they are killed, but it doesn't always work, and Kosher kill animals have to be conscious at the time of slaughter!. Birds are exhempt from humane slaughter laws, so they can (and are) killed by being dropped into boiling water!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, it is alive, it is nervous in the slaughterhouse, feeling the panic of changed environment, cramped spaces, etc, etc etc!. Then the shoot the animal in the head!. Just like the picture!.
