I think you are confused, vegans do not own animals because that would be exploitations no matter how you slice it!.
No matter how much you love your animal or think you are doing it a favor, It is exploitation at the basic level that you are exploiting it to care for you and show you attention and love!.
I'm not saying adopting animals or having animals is wrong, it's actually a really good thing to do, but a vegan would not own an animal!.

A typical vegan would say no, but I know vegans (me included) that would say go ahead and let the cat wear the leather collar and lead if the cat had them already!. I personally would not go out and spend money on a new leather collar (when all the hot collars are the nylon ones!)!. I would not want to put the leather collar in a landfill!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

When I took my cat to the pet store, she chose a canvas collar!. I told her she could have anything and that's what she chose!.
