This B vitamin is available ONLY in animal products or fermented plant foods!. Fermented foods such as miso and tempeh give us some B12 but generally not enough and the amount of B12 in these foods tends to be variable!. The most reliable source of vitamin B-12 for the vegan diet is nutritional yeast that is grown on a vitamin B-12 enriched medium (e!.g!. Red Star brand)!. Vegans need to make sure to use vitamin B-12 fortified foods (such as enriched soy beverages) or supplements to ensure adequate intake!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vitamin B12 is naturally absent in plant foods, which is why it's so important for vegans to eat B12 enriched foods, such as fortified breakfast cereals!. Some brands of soymilk and soy yogurt have added B12 too!. Some vegans choose to take a supplement to help safeguard their health!. Despite what you may have heard, algae and seaweed are NOT reliable sources of vitamin B12!.
The importance of this vital nutrient should not be underestimated!. ''B12 protects the nervous system!. Without it, permanent damage can result (e!.g!., blindness, deafness, dementia)!. Fatigue, and tingling in the hands or feet, can be early signs of deficiency!. B12 also keeps the digestive system healthy and an overt deficiency can cause digestive problems''!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
