I'm lactose intolerant! Dessert alternatives?!

Question: who else is? high-five to them =(
i know that i'm supposed to avoid 'dairy products'... but of course, i fail to realize that 80% of everything we eat has SOME form of dairy in it. life is le miserable when you can't indulge in some of your favourite desserts just because your body can't break down something right. bahh. someone join the bandwagon. any dessert alternatives / recipes that i could go for?

Swedish Glace dairy-free, lactose-free ice cream is great (available in four flavours - vanilla [great to use instead of cream as an accompaniment to pies, puddings etc], caramel [yum], raspberry [yum] and chocolate [surprisingly disappointing]), but I think only currently available in Europe, so if you're in North America, that won't help.

Tofutti make dairy-free ice cream that I think is also available in the US. Nowhere near as good as Swedish Glace, but passable.

I had a lactose-intolerant flatmate that used to buy lactolite milk (cow's milk with the lactose removed) - she could find that at large supermarkets in Britain and apparently it's sold everywhere in Finland, her home country, where a large proportion of the country are lactose intolerant. (She also found she could tolerate cheese and yoghurt much better than milk or cream - the bacteria break down a lot of the lactose)

Sorbet is usually dairy-free and lactose-free.

Health food stores and Jewish delicatessens are good places to look for dairy- and lactose-free products (as devout Jews won't eat dairy and meat at the same meal, they often stock dairy-free deserts to eat with meat-based meals)

As for home-made, in winter months I live on apple crumble and steamed jam pudding.

Apple crumble: peel, core and slice 4-6 eating apples (or 2-4 cooking apples). Heat in a saucepan with about 3 tsps sugar and a little water for a few minutes. Place in heatproof dish. Rub 3oz of vegan margarine into 6oz of flour. Add 3oz sugar, 1tsp cinnamon and 1tbsp oats (optional). Pour on top of apples and bake in oven at 200 degrees for about half an hour.

Jam pudding: Put a tablespoon of jam at the bottom of a microwaveable basin. Rub 7oz flour, 3oz vegan margarine and 2oz sugar together with your fingers. Mix to a smooth dough with soya milk and pour on top of the jam. Cover and microwave on full power for 5 minutes. Leave to stand for 5 more minutes. eat. (serves 3-4)

Good luck!

Get yourself a couple of vegan cookbooks... yummy desserts with 0% dairy. Any of Isa Chandra Moskowitz's cookboks have delectable cookies, cupcakes, pies, bars, etc... (not to mentions "real" food with no dairy to be seen.)

There are lots of traditional cookies that are vegan (Oreos), and even more generic versions (usually the Keebler Fudge Shoppe knockoff store-brand cookies. I get the fudge mint ones, which are like mint girl scout cookies)

Temptation brand (soy) ice cream is hard to find but it's the best ever.

The Chicago Diner has some realllly good desserts. Their vegan chocolate chip cheesecake is awesome. You can find their stuff in the bakery section of Whole Foods.

I believe its Duncan Hines brand, their walnut brownie mix is vegan.

Many of the traditional canned frostings are vegan.

At least one of the Ghirardelli cookie mixes is vegan.

There are some freezer ready-made pies that are vegan (i'm trying to think of what brand the Apple one I used to get was).

Just learn to read ingredient panels, and know that just because one package of a dessert says it has milk or another animal product in it, doesn't mean they all do.

There is an entire world of deliciousness that is dairy-free...

Try soy ice cream; I just bought some today called "Peanut Butter Zig Zag"; it's from the brand Purely Decadent.

You can always look for vegan pies and cakes in health food stores, they wouldn't have dairy (or any eggs, if it makes any difference to you).

REAL dark chocolate shouldn't have dairy in it. I know that some of the gourmet chocolates in grocery stores have no dairy in them. You can also find dairy-free chocolate chips in health food stores.

have you tried taking a lactose intolerance pill such as lateeze or lactaid? I used to be lactose intolerant and they worked really well for me. You'd just take one before ingesting dairy.

Fresh fruit platter (without wipped cream topping in your case) is one of my favorite desserts..
so is chilled "ta-hu" (or tofu as most people call it), a type of chinese beancurd found in most oriental stores which is creamy in texture and is usally topped with a brown sugar syrup and/or fruits such as canned lychees or almond jelly.
P i am not a vegetarian or vegan but dessert is one of my weaknesses.

I have learn of something spectacular! Almond Milk! :o

It's supposed to be great with Cereal and for some Bake Goods.

When it comes to foods you do not want to be sweet, you could try Goat Milk. But the only Goat Milk I have found where I live is 30 minutes away and cost like 8 dollars for like a Quart.

Goat Milk is actually the most compatible milk for Predator and Social Animals like Humans, Cats, and Dogs ( next to Mother's Milk of course). It is the milk Many Europeans are use to useing. You may be able to locate an Italian Store in your area,.. many products there will be made with Goat Milk. Some other Meditareanian stores will have Goat Milk products as well. Usually it's Goat Cheese everyone is seeking for their Speg, quesh, and home made pizzas.

Good Luck! ( Avoid haveing too much Soy Milk or too much Rice Milk and do not use them for Bake Goods).

tgry this site and see if they are any good for you

Actually, some of my favorite desserts are dairy free. I agree with the fruit alternatives, but if you are looking for something decadent, try making something with silken tofu.

My favorite site for tofu-based desserts is www.morinu.com
Click on recipes at the top, and then on desserts. Voila...the dessert world becomes your oyster! Yummy!

Yeah, some great stuff out there.
I just discovered a new one to me today, non-dairy "Scheese"

There must be about one million non-dairy fake-dairy products on the market. Non-dairy yoghurt, non-dairy cheese, all kinds of really great beverages without dairy... fantastic non-dairy ice-cream... endless. Lots of other suggestion people have given here too, BUT... no one has told you this yet:

Lactose intolerance is just a term made-up by the evil people. The term is designed to make you think that there is something 'wrong' with you. But actually, all humans (all mammals on the planet) are lactose intolerant. See, mammals only consume milk from their mother from birth until they are done with it. With humans, breastfeeding exclusively for about 8 months, then they still breastfeed for the next couple years or more. In the past, depending on the available foods etc., children would continue to breastfeed up to 8 years. But in today's modern countries, most find the thought of breastfeeding at all to be repulsive... and use evil formula. So, once you stop breastfeeding, you will lose the ability to digest milk because you will no longer need it for the rest of your life... breast milk is essentially for babies/children. But, if you continue to consume milk, such as other animal's milk, this can stimulate the ability to digest it. Remember, most of Asia consumes no dairy -- not to mention other areas in the world.

What happens in the USA is that kids are milk crazy... drink it all the time, put it on their cereals, ice-cream, desserts, ... most kid's 'foods' (dare I call them food) are loaded with dairy. But when people get older, they consume less and less dairy, and eventually they only put it in their coffee or the occasional ice-cream. Then one day, they go and drink a glass or milk or something... consume more than usual and have horrible digestive pains etc. "What's wrong doc?" "You are lactose intolerant. Take these lactate pills for the rest of your life."

I don't eat any dairy -- not for a long time and I don't miss it.
