Does Bottled Water Expire? And How??!

Question:

Does Bottled Water Expire? And How??

Answers:
No it does not expire if it is not opened. Expiration date is given for legal reasons. Say the expiration date is April 30, 2007. It's good on April 29 but not the 30th? Especially water. It doesn't spoil or change. It might not taste very good since it may absorb some of the "plasticizer" used in molding the bottle. But that should not hurt you (I would hope). Even if a bacteria gets into the bottle, it would eventually die from lack of food.

Yes, usually after 5 years.

Yes it does expire. Bacteria can grow in it, even though it's still sealed in the bottle. Also, the plastic bottle may begin to break down or deteriorate after so long.

It does have an expiration date but if it's unopened I would feel safe using it no matter if it was long past the date.

no

No. Bacteria are living organisms that require water AND food to grow. Algae need need CO2 to grow. A sealed water bottle will not have enough CO2 for algae growth.

According to the International Bottled Water Association, the FDA has not established a shelf life for water, so you can store those bottles indefinitely. As long as the packaging is intact and unopened, you shouldn't need to worry about any type of bacteria or microorganisms growing in the water. If the bottle has been opened, however, it can grow bacteria and algae if it is not consumed within 2 weeks.

So while it doesn't appear that unopened bottles of water actually go "bad" in the sense that they would make you sick, they might not taste the greatest after several years of sitting on the shelf collecting dust.
