I need to up my iron!?!

Question:

I need to up my iron!?

I've been a vegan for almost a year now, and lately everyone tells me how pale I am, and that they think I might be anemic.
I know I should be taking some supplements, and I really do want to make sure I can maintain my healthy lifestyle. Does anyone know if Wal*Mart would have iron supplements?
Also... does anyone have any high iron vegan recipes (a simple vegetarian recipe would so, I can convert around it!) that will help me. Thank you.
And please, no comments about "Eat some meat!" I swear, I hear that every single day!

It's to a point now where I'm always tired, and getting up is strenuous enough. I know I don't need to eat meat again, just looking for some suggestions.

I'm planning on it, but I can't find any at Stop & Shop, I was wondering if they sold them at a Walmart or anything like that.

Auntie Vegan.
When you tell me to shut my mouth and stay away from normal people, I can't help but to think if you alienate vegans from society.
A vegan lifestyle is healthy lifestyle, but I admit that I have let myself slip in the right foods to eat for a sufficient source of iron, but I would like to note that taking vitamins isn't something abnormal, and everyone should take them. I'm simply searching for BOTH ways eating, and vitamins to help myself get back to health.
Thank you for the pessimistic answer though, I appreciate it.

Don't shop at Walmart for your vitamins if you can help it.

What you need is a supplement called Yellow Dock. It comes from a flower and unless it in gelitin cap it will be vegan. It's the best and fastest way to up your iron. It should be pretty cheap too, between $5 - $7.

Also when you are eating high iron foods make sure you mix them with foods high in vitamin C makes you absorb the iron better.

My husband has a cronic problem with low iron levels, and the yellow dock has really saved the day. I learned about it from a wonder woman in her 70's who owner a healthy food store in a small town. She's been into alternative medicine for over 50 years. Once he started taking it his iron levels went up back to normal in a few days.

You may want to try out a greens & protein supplement as well. You may have an enzyme inbalance and the greens will help, and the protein (which should be plant proteins) will help with your energy levels.

If I can be over more assistance email me.

take supplements

Yea, you get iron poor blood from not eating red meats.
So...........since you are a vegan, you gotta take a supplement (yes wallmart has supplements). OR eat one heck of a lot of GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES.

Other Foods high in iron
Liver and other meats
Seafood
Dried fruits like apricots, prunes and raisins
Nuts
Beans, especially lima beans
Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and broccoli
Blackstrap molasses
Whole grains
Iron-fortified breads and cereals (check the label)

vitamin b12 is vital (it helps your body aborb nutrients and gives you energy).....also...raw GREEN veggies have the highest iron content. eat broccoli, spinach, and so on. if you did a raw veg diet for a while, it would help.

Go to your doctor and get a blood test. That will tell you if you are anemic.
Second, i found a website that can help you get more iron in your vegan diet. I'll put it in sources.
You might also want to take some iron supplements. I'm pretty sure you can get them at Walmart.

Good luck.

I get iron shots from my doctor to treat my anemia. As awful as shots are, once I began receiving the shots, I felt so much more energized, my hair stopped falling out, and I gained a healthy blush (:

Eat salads with plenty of dark greens and SPINACH. I know it's a myth that spinach is the perfect source or iron - but it still has a decent amount and a serving a day will make a world of difference.

Take Vitamin C supplements - they will help you absorb iron better. Even one bottle of Vitamin Water is a delicious way to get 250% of your daily Vitamin C value.

Good luck, and feel better soon!

all the advice so far is good;
the best absorbtion type of B-12 is sublingual (under the tongue) health food store would likely have them
raisins are an excellent source of iron

Iron is one of those things that is very hard to get in a vegan diet. If you are a male, do not take iron supplements. Non-dietary iron in men seems to have very negative effects on heart health. If you are seriously low on energy and have other issues related to anemia, I would strongly recommend seeing a doctor or at least a registered dietician.

Otherwise, try to eat lots and lots of dark green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale. At least two portions the size of your fist every day. If after two weeks your situation does not improve, you can assume your condition will not get any better without supplementing your diet with some form of high-iron food. Namely red meat or fish. I won't get into a philisophical debate on vegan vs. omnivore. Veganism is demonstrably not working for you, so you will have to find a solution that promotes your good health and does not offend your sensibilities.

Of course, I hope that just getting the right vegetables into your diet will balance you, but you have to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

Good luck.

Green leafy veg is a really good source of iron. spinach is one of the typically quoted one, you can incorporate it into pasta sauces have it raw cooked etc etc I think nuts are reasonably high in iron too.

Eat lots of Spinach

Well up your whatever. Boy are you veganed. ("vegan" is the new politically correct word for the F word according to the urban dictionary.)

You said: " I know I should be taking some supplements, and I really do want to make sure I can maintain my healthy lifestyle."

Yeah, nice "healthy lifestyle" everyone is telling you how pale you are and there is some suggestion that you are anemic. DUH!.

No, I won't tell you "eat meat". I figure if you get weak enough, you'll shut your veganing mouth about your "healthy lifestyle" and stay the vegan away from normal people.

Oh man you best get your self to the doctors that's not a good sign..

just reading some of the posts here scares me greatly whats wrong with some people!!! surly if you plan to make such a drastic life change as going vegan clearly is,,,,,, You must research it properly and make sure you get everything your personal body needs to maintain a healthy balance.. just popping pills or going to the doc's for shots is not the answer.

Good luck dude follow the people above who are telling you the right way to go.
