Do vegans swat flies?!

Question:

Do vegans swat flies?

Answers:
They're not supposed to.

The one I work with does and she also stomps bugs to death!

ha ha!

I know someone who is Vegan and she will not swat flies...I think it is ridiculous since flies are pest and carry disease!

They are not suppose to but they probably still do!!

Hahaha - I have wondered the same thing! I suppose I'm vegan and I do love animals, but my home is my domain and I don't want flies in them. I capture other bugs and let them go outside, but flies and fruit flies and mosquitoes do die at my hands!

P.S. EDIT: I hope a bear never breaks into Charlotte's house! I'd like to see her shoo one of those away. I carry a gun on my walks on my property. It is unlikley that a mountain lion would ever attack me, but if startled they can attack and I won't sacrifice mine for an animal's. I also kill any black widows or brown recluse spiders found near the house and I will kill a rattler if it gets too close - trying to remove it to a place far away is too risky. I wouldn't want to wipe these animals off the face of the earth, but I will secure my home and property (there is plenty of land for them to be free in. Here's an aerial view of my commuity: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/print.adp?m... ). This isn't some mythical garden of Eden where all creatures lie together in love and harmony. We're still animals and we must protect ourselves from other animals that can cause us harm. My actions and beliefs are fully in line with my morals. Anyone who doesn't think I fit into their little labeled box can kiss my butt.

Some do, some don't; it depends on how strongly they enforce animal rights. I do; they carry diseases and DESERVE to be swatted. Birds and mammals don't deserve swatting because they are bred purely for consumption and no animal should be bred for that. Before I swat flies, though, I try to force them out the window. If that doesn't work, sorry stupid buggy (that's me talking to the fly), but SWAT! and you're dead.

I don't, and I refuse to harm any animals. I will take any bugs I find in my house outside and let them go. I don't even swat at mosquitoes - just put on repellent and leave them be.

In my opinion, if a vegan swats flies, or harms any other innocent creatures, they are harming the environment and going against their supposed "morals."

Some, not everyone who's a vegan is a vegan for ethical reasons. Even if one does not swat flies, one unintentionally kills his share of insects by the simple act of walking, breathing or flushing the toliet. Dead is dead, seems to me all vegans are guilty of at least negligent animalcide by their own logic. God gave me the enzymes to digest meat and I intend to take advantage of them.

Yes, as long as they don't eat them!

I learned from my granny to either chase them out, or if they're too stubborn to carefully catch them with a towel, take them outside and let them out. Even though my granny ate meat, she never allowed anyone to kill insects. So how could I as a vegan do that?

There are many easy, humane ways to get rid of bugs in your house, without harming them. Here is a good link: http://www.vegansociety.com/html/people/...

I never kill anything intentionally.. the last thing I might have killed was a tiny spider a few nights ago and I accidentally hit it with a glass that cut off part of its two legs, I felt awful. I still put it outside though - it was still mobile and figured it still wasn't my place to decide if it wanted to be alive or not. I always catch spiders, beetles, mosquitoes and flys. Ever since I've became vegan and do this I've yet to be bitten by a bug. Perhaps its some sort of strange karma, who knows =)

In Oregon we used to have sugar ants living in our house too..I'd spend 5-10 minutes checking the bathtub floor for them..usually removing 3-6. They liked to live in the top edges of the shower because we had ivy plants there. I thought it was neat and loved watching them walk about following there scent trails. They are really passive and gentle.

My older half-sister is vegan and has been vegan since she was age 12. It's been at least a decade now. When she was younger, I've seen her scream for dad to kill a cockroach, and she hates junebugs intensely. She doesn't try to save all lives--she's not on the Jainism level or anything. (Jains wear those masks to prevent inhaling bugs.)

On the other hand, she won't use anything with beeswax or leather. She is a very strict vegan, and doesn't believe it's against her principles to squash a creepy junebug in the pool.

=)

I don't swat them, but there aren't many bugs where I live anyway.

I'm vegetarian, but I don't see the connection?
What would be wrong if they do?!
Flies carry diseases and bacteria-they live off of crap and trash and other disgusting things and if they get into my home and try to eat and touch the food that my family and I eat, then it's in the wrong place at the wrong time..
I'm not one to want to squoosh any bug that gets into my home. I don't bother some, others, if I'm not scared, I'll remove them by putting them out the window or door.
When I'm outside, I'm in their territory pretty much so I'll just shoo them away if they bug me or my kids. Otherwise, they usually go about their business and I go about mine.
I usually adore ladybugs! I even used to hold them all the time-until last year I discovered imposters that resemble them but these bugs actually bite! I still admire their beauty but I'm not sure which is which so I no longer hold them.

Hahaha your innocence makes me smile.

Ok, being a vegan is about making choices concerning your diet and how your body obtains nutrition. It has nothing to do with killing a bug. Besides, you can always bend the rules of your dietary status, it's your life and you don't have to be so strict. I have a vegan friend who eats eggs, as long as they are organic, hormone-free and cage-free.

No, you try to shoo them outdoors or let them die of old age...unless there are zillions of them and you are outnumbered...
