How do vegetarians and vegans feel about leather.?!

Question:

How do vegetarians and vegans feel about leather.?

No cow is killed for the leather, it is an externality from the beef industry.
Do you feel that it is acceptable or is it still to much.

Serious question for research, please do not answer it if it insults you.

lizzy i totaly agree that wearing fur is disgusting and i am not a vegitarian, but dont you agree that the poor old cow gets a raw deal.....perhaps because leather is so versitile and would be difficult to replace..at least if everyone demanded an alternative

I am vegetarian and i disagree strongly with leather.. it's a dead animals skin just like fur! I think it is a bit hippocrital to be anti- fur or meat then wear leather.. plus it smells really bad.

Lifestyle vegans don't believe in leather because it supports the beef industry (and it's kind of disgusting to be wearing a dead animal's skin). About a third of the money from the cow comes from the leather, so by avoiding leather, you make sure there is no demand for murder at all. Most vegetarians are lifestyle vegans, though they still eat dairy and eggs. So... almost all vegans and vegetarians avoid leather and any other dead skins.

I am a vegetarian and I have leather couches, leather jackets, and leather shoes. I would never have anything made out of fur because like you said - they are not killing the cow for the leather but they DO kill animals for their fur....it's awful.

I like how durable the leather is but it is kinda gross to think I'm sitting or wrapping myself in a cow :|

I bet I get some thumbs down for this.......

I thought you were just doing this for research?? I can see you are siding with the cow - that cool. This conversation has got me thinking. But it seems impossible to get people to stop eating beef - at least the people around me. - thanks

it's stupid really. how many clothes have you ever seen worn that were from a factory that naturally was built on an animals habitat. or car factories that infringe on animal habitat. I can't eat anything that has animal products or use anything that was used in the harm of animals? do they walk around barefoot all day with no car and no house made from wood? there is no end and we are all hipocrites.
I also do not understand people who have leather and say this. are you not wearing/adorning your home with the skin of animals?

As long as there can be money made from the slaughter of animals there is a reason to continue killing animals. I try to not support any industry that helps put money in the pockets of the meat industries and businesses that buy animal by-products contribute to the wealth of the meat industry. The only real power I have is my money and I won't knowingly help them to be more successful and therefore have a reason to continue killing. I continue to use most of the products that I bought when I was still blissfully ignoran, but I will replace them with non-animal versions when they wear out.

Let me add: I am not a huge fan of petroleum products or gluttonous consumerism, either. I try to limit the number of shoes and purses I have and I take care of what I do have so they last.

Because wearing leather supports the meat industry; after all, the meat industry does sell these "byproducts", doesn't it? Plus it's bad for the environment; chemicals used to soften and shine leather pollute water and result in lung cancer.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I still feel a little guilty about my Birkenstocks sometimes. However, like you said, as long as they are using the rest of the cow, it doens't bother me. I'm like the Native American concept of using the whole animal and not wasting it. My friend also looked at me strangely one day and said, "Christina, after all the crap you speak about the meat industry, you honestly think that they are going to waste any part of the cow??? Of course they sold the meat and someoen ate it!!!". That's makes me feel ok. Not to mention that I absolutely LOVE my Birks!!! However, I'd never wear fur. It uses way to many animals as many of the fur-animals are small and they aren't being killed primarily for fur. That's just my reasoning though. Also, fur is simply a conspicuous consumption item whereas Birkenstocks serve a purpose and are good for your feet.

Leather is dead skin.

I refuse to wear anything that came from a living, breathing, feeling creature.

I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a dead animal, simple as.

Leather is the skin of tortured animals.

It's still against the principles of my vegan half-sister. She won't use any animal products, beeswax and leather included, because she thinks the animals suffer. She says that animals certainly suffer when they are killed and she doesn't like leather.

That's her opinion.

I'm a vegan by diet and I'd be a hypocrite if I told you I don't own any leather. I have several bags and several pairs of shoes that are leather, but I haven't bought anything new in over a year. I feel as though I might as well wear them until they fall apart in order to get the most I can out of them. Even though I knew that leather was a cow, it didn't really click until about a year ago.

Iam a vegan and i think killing animals for meat fur is evil. its not ok to kill people for meat and skin so why is it ok to kill animals cause they cant speak and say how they feel dont mean its ok to kill an animal its sick

no i dont wear leather its the cows skin not mine to wear!

Its more vegans that don't agree with it. Some/ most vegetarians are ok with it.

I'm changing what I said, because I realised what I said sounded wrong. But, what I meant was I had leather stuff before I became vegetarian, I'm not going to go and burn it because I'm now vegetarian... that would be a waste and I would need to replace it. But I don't go and buy leather products now.

It doesn't matter. Whether cows are killed for one thing or another, leather is still animal skin and most vegetarians, and all vegans, do not want to go around sporting carcasses of any sort.

Besides, if one doesn't eat the meat of an animal because it's life has been a daily hell in a dark, metal crated stinkhole factory farm since birth, then it got shot, skinned and quartered, wearing its skin is totally hypocritical.

If all the animal is used food, pelt What is the problem, nothing is wasted, if an animal is killed just for its pelt then that is abhorrent.

But looking at these answers it just proves how HYPOCRITICAL both "veggies and vegans" really are.
Sorry, last dig at various people.

I'm a vegetarian, and as such don't buy leather or animal skin products. I do my best to buy vegan shoes (i.e. ones that are stitched, rather than glued.)

However, I did own some leather jackets and a John Motson style sheepskin before going vegetarian. I still wear the sheepskin - to throw it out would be a waste. I wouldn't buy it now though.

However, leather is often NOT a bi-product of the meat industry.

The defintion of a vegetarian is about diet.

but personally, i don't understand how any vegetarian can wear leather. Cows are killed for thier meat, leather and by-products. They are all interlinked and contribute to the cost model of rearing and killing the cow.

I live in the farming industry and be quite clear that cows woudl not be killed for meat only, it would be too expensive.

Therefore leather users are responsible for the death of the cow.

There is no denying that. If you are happy with that, fair enough, but leather wearers, or users, like "lizzy" above, need to be honest with themselves that they are responsible for the death of the cow.

For some, i guess they bought or inherited the leather items before they turned veggie so for them the "deed is done" and they had no impact on the animal.

I am a vegan and avoid leather as well as wool and silk etc.
