What made you decide to become a Vegetarian/Vegan?
As a vegetarian myself I obviously know my own personal reasons for becoming one, I am just curious to know why other people made the choice to become a vegetarian/vegan.

The more I think about it, the more I realize it really wasn't a choice. Not wanting to cause other sentients beings pain & death is innate. It is not just an emotional "choice," but a physiological reflex. It is enlightening to remember who we were - to remember our actual reactions and affection for the natural world before we felt the societal pressure to impress & be accepted by parents, friends - people.
I was raised by meat-eaters, but I always had a nagging feeling that something was wrong with eating meat (as I believe most children have when they are presented with meat that is not disguised as hot dogs, nuggets, etc.). Around age 3, before I knew of slaughterhouse horrors, I clearly remember my revulsion to seeing my mother handle & prepare meat. My reaction is in the same vein as the natural, visceral reaction for humans to be repelled by the smell of dead animals.
The majority have been desensitized into seeing meat as "sanitary" wholesome packages of food instead of the unsanitary, disguised rotting flesh it really is. If more listened to their bodies, spoken through the epidemic of animal-derived food-borne illnesses, e.g., e-coli, lactose intolerance, salmonella, heart disease, etc., they'd see the light: humans were never meant to eat animals & their products. Plus, our bodies were not designed to digest animals vs. natural carnivores, e.g., humans have long & complex digestive systems, do not have natural resistance to bacteria from raw flesh, etc.
Then there is that little thing called the conscience; we can understand that it is wrong to cause pain & death. While I do not believe humans have a monopoly on thinking & emotions, we do the have the gift of advanced linguistic capabilities, which have enabled us to evolve from mostly reactionary survivalists to more contemplative empathizers - with the Bush administration excluded ;) Instead of succumbing to fear to destroy other creatures due to their supposed threats to our survival, we can understand that the survival of our species does not depend on the death of other sentient beings, but on our own capacity to transcend fear and embrace peace. We can understand that humans have, can & will survive on the perfect sources of nutrition from non-sentients, which are fed by the sun & sprouted from the earth. Of the sentients, most humans feel pain when they see others, including animals, in pain. Most do not wish to cause unncessary torture & death of those beings. How many would still eat meat if they had to slit the throat of the animal him/herself? I know I wasn't born that way.
well i became a vegetarian because i love animals and i really never have been that fond about meat...what pushed me to veganism would be "Fast Food Nation" (the worst movie ever) but really meaningful =]
I fell on my head.
Because factor farms and slaughter houses treat the animals like the are a piece of carp like they have no feelings and they don't feel pain!!!!!
I am a vegeterian by birth because my parents never eat non veg stuff and as I went ahead I felt being veg is the best thing in the world. Let me share with you about few of my friends:
1. He is 110kgs and wants to lose weight, first thing doctor tells him stop drinks and non veg
2. Another uncle of mine is a heart patient and he had to leave it
The list goes on as the days are progressing I have found lot of people becoming veg because of health reasons.
Few religions in India dont allow yo to eat Non veg even that is one reason
Read the book skinny *****...
you'll see why when you eat meat all your doing is hurting youself and hurting the animals..
lose/lose situation...
I'm not a veggie but my 17 year old daughter has been one for about 10 years.
She has always loved animals so I wasn't surprised when she asked me (as I was cooking lamb chops for dinner) if, when you ate lamb you were really eating a lamb. And, the same with a chicken. Beef and pork are a little less obvious as they don't share their name with the animal, but as soon as she found out she was eating an animal, she stopped eating meat.
As she grew older and understood ingredients better, she stopped eating anything that contains, as she put it so succinctly, "dead animal".
Im not a vegetarian or vegan. I was a vegetarian once and it almost killed me. I decided eating animals was better for me than starving to death and being weak and miserable. I think a lot of the vegetarians and vegans these days do it because it is a fad or cool. Some actually do it for their own personal reasons. As long as they believe in what they are standing for, they are welcome to keep on keeping
I got a pony when I was 13 and when I realised what an amazing personality he had and the fact he ws much the same as cows, sheep etc I just couldnt hack eating meat anymore - that was twenty years ago and I dont have horses anymore but I dont think I could ever go back to eating meat!
ur question.
well i became a vegetarian because i love animals and i really never have been that fond about meat...what pushed me to veganism would be "Fast Food Nation" its a movie and also this movie on youtube heres the link i bet by the time your done watching you'll never even touch meat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pundifph... and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mn-knogfe... and
Because factor farms and slaughter houses treat the animals like the are they have no feelings and they don't feel pain!!!!! they all have homes ,familys, life, and feelings so plz dont ever eat mean its a bad deed
Kentuckyfriedcruelty.com made me decide to become a vegetarian. The people that work in farm factories are disgusting human beings and YUM Industries needs to be shut down. My benefits are intrinsic. I have NEVER felt better!!!!!
Watching a programme once on the run up to Christmas, which showed the horrific journey off how the turkey's got the the dining table - vowed never to eat another animal again (1980)
I didn't like the idea of eating something that used to be alive.
I've always been all about animal rights. After viewing a couple of vidoes on kentuckyfriedcruelty.com and PETA.com I decided that there was no way i could support such cruelty to animals. I had no idea it was that bad, and will never eat meat again.
I couldn't stand the idea that I'm eating animal corpse, animals are innocent helpless cute creatures, and those bastards people just kill them because of their stupid desires (eating meat is nothing else but desire, they can shut up with that people need meat, that's not true!) and how they kill? I have seen some videos about this, that was something just unbelievable, with no emotions at all those butchers or whatever they are called just chop up that poor animal in pieces while it is still alive *feels sick*... >_< and when you're eating for example chicken, don't you feel sick seeing all those bones, sinews, skin and stuff pfff..I couldn't stand that. >_<
As a child, I was always grossed out by eating meat. I'd be the one at the dinner table asking,"What animal are we eating tonight?"
I was destined to become a vegetarian because eating meat/poultry/pork/seafood was always difficult for me. I was told that I would hide my dinner(that contained meat) under the sofa b/c I didn't want to eat it!
I don't agree with eating another living being that had parents. Humans were not made for meat consumption because our teeth and digestive systems were not created for it.
I could not help but think about the poor animal and how ruthlessly it was slaughtered(there is NO such thing as "humane slaughter"-THAT is an oxymoron in itself!!).
Another bonus to omiting meat from one's diet is it is much, much healthier.
Each person who is living a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle is saving approximately 95 animals from slaughter a day!
When you realize how many people are already living a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle and the many more that will become vegetarians/vegans, that's ALOT of animals lives being saved!
To be honest i dont mind the killing of animals its the natural order of the food chain, ive never seen anyone protesting outside a lions den because its just killed a zebra.
Even plants are alive.
The reason i turned vege was because i found out they feed mashed up chickens to sheep and mashed up sheep to pigs and mashed up animals to other animals which would never naturally eat that stuff.
They only stopped feeding cows to cows after the mad cow incident but they still feed other animals to other animals.
its not right.
I don't eat beef but I eat other meats! Beef is bad for you to !!!!
because animals are my life
i have a hamster, dog, fish and i would never let anything happen to them and i like cows, pigs, sheep why should i be a greedy sod and eat Innocent creatures?
I'm an animal lover and if i ate meat i would NOT have a right to call myself an animal lover!
im sooooo proud to be a veggie animals rule they have feelings and im not going to hurt them i like carrots YAAAAY
.......ohhh and the reason I'm a vegetarian is because i have a heart and so do they!

After looking at this site the very thought of eating meat made me sick http://www.slaughterhousecam.com/...
PETA had alot to do with it and I would like to thank them. Also I have always had a passion for loving my animals.
I became a vegetarian in the seventh grade when I found out how cruel factory farms were to animals. I just found it to be the most abominable thing I had ever heard, and wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I contributed to that.
Veganism is so incredibly difficult to do, though I really would love to be one. I go through periods where I am vegan, and then periods where I'm not....I do use soymilk, eat "veggie slices" (fake cheese) and try my best to always get sherbert when I go to an ice cream parlor. Perhaps when I have more time to devote to my diet, and don't have to think so much about school work and such, I'll be able to be a true vegan.
Love for animals originally. Now that is reinforced by my religious beliefs and the fact that I believe an animal product free diet is healthier.
I went vegan over enviormental issuie's mainly, never cared for red meat when i did eat meat, but the more I learned and thought about what they put into these animals, not to mention how they are treated, did'nt sit well with me, the same can go for what they are doing to our crop staple's here in the U.S. with GMO's, I do'nt want that in my body...
At first I thought it could be a challange but then i really started getting into it so I just stuck with it.
Then I saw the peta videos and I never want to eat meat again.
At 14 ( 27 years ago ) i was invited to see a pig farm because the farmering community had an open day, they were very proud of this animal husbandry.
I turned veggie instantly. If thats the best the industry has to offer, god help us all and shame on anyone who eats meat and supports this cruelty, torture, bribe-feeding hormone forced growth and death. The evidence is there for you all to see.
I now own an arable farm in the middle of the dairy and beef farming community and there is nothing that would ever make me eat meat.
Imagine the worse it could be. right, now multiply it by 100.
Meateaters need to know what they are paying for, how they live with themselves i will never know.
We've got pet sheep, cows and chickens. They are full of character. Why are they any different to a pet dog or cat ?
About 20 years or so ago, I was watching my pet parakeets sing and frying chicken and I thought "I am like their mom, so they must think of me as some sort of cannibal for eating their relatives"...
My father used to have a cattle farm where he reared cows for the beef industry. I grew up working on this farm from a very young child so i got to know the ins and outs of the trade quite well.
One of my jobs on the farm was to bottle feed the calves if their mother died in birth. This gave me a interesting view point as i began to feel more like a parent to the animals.
Naturally this led to vegetarianism as i could no longer eat meat because i could appreciate the morals of it at first hand.
I used to cry myself to sleep on a Sunday night because Monday was market day when i had to say good bye to my friends the cows.
I became a veggie after a trip to a slaughter house 15 years ago. I saw what went on inside and witness a lorry load of pigs meet their end. That was me veggie.
"fast food nation" and "meet your meat" watch these...
