What is a vegan?
Answers:
Veganism (also strict or pure vegetarianism), is a philosophy and a way of living, that seeks to exclude, as much as possible and practical, all use of animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. People practice veganism for a variety of reasons; including ethical concerns for animal rights, concerns about the environment, perceived health benefits, and spiritual or religious concerns.
Polls have variously reported vegans to be between 0.2 and 1.3% of the US population, and between 0.25% and 0.4% of the UK population.
Vegetarian diets (a relaxed form of Veganism) have been credited with lowering several health risks such as blood cholesterol, blood pressure, hypertension, prostate and colon cancer, amoung others. Due to the health risks associated with reduced levels of some vitamins and minerals (B12, D, calcium and iodine) in a vegan diet, vegans have been encouraged to take suppliments and carefully monitor their diet.
June, a vegan is somebody who eats absolutely no food containing animal bi-products, especially dairy. Instead, vegans get their calcium and protein from other foodstuffs, like soybeans, rice, almonds, etc. Basically anything that is grown organically.
