What are some vegetarian alternatives to fish oil supplements?

I am a dancer and would normally take a fish oil supplement or just eat fish for my joints and all that. But now that I'm vegetarian, I'm looking for animal-friendly options to get the same benefits for dancing. Suggestions? Anyone found something that really works?

flax, flax, flax, okay, ya might be tired of this answer, but I'll add some new useful tips for it:

For omega-3 & phytoestrogens,Take two tablespoons of FRESHLY GROUND flax SEEDS per day (a regular coffee grinder is works great). So how exactly does one "take" flax meal? Sprinkle it on cereal, blend it into a smoothie, etc.

Keep in refrigerator/freezer.

Avoid the flax oil as it goes rancid quickly & who knows how long it's been sitting on the store shelf.

Walnuts are a good source of omega-3 as well.

Get 10 min. exposure to direct sunlight everyday for vit. D.

Dance for joy in your health saavy decision to avoid fish oil:
Cod liver oil contains toxic levels of vitamin A, plus fish in general contain contaminants.

You take fish oil for the Omega 3 fatty acids, right? You can also get fatty acids from flax seed oil. Honestly, though, you'll get more mileage out of stretching exercises than anything you could eat.

If you are referring to omega-3's,then you can get that from flax seeds or flax seed oil.

I am not quite sure why you are eating fish or taking fish oil supplements for your joints. If it is for the Omega 3 Fatty Acids alternatives are Flaxseed, Flaxseed Oil, Walnuts, Soybeans and cooking with soybean oil. Other than that there is a supplement called Prevention Joint Health Vegetarian Glucosamine 1500mg. If you want you can get it at www.drugstore.com.

You don't actually need the supplements. They're very over-rated and if you take care of your joints properly then you won't need to take supplements of any sort.

Flaxseed oil is the most common vegetarian alternative and the easiest to find. Hemp oil is harder to find but has an even more ideal omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio, which is good for the heart, the eyes, the joints--probably the whole body. As with any supplement, use in moderation.

Ground flax seeds. added to any foods works super. I also like Udo's Blend Oil... it has flax oil in it makes a great oil for dressings on salads.

Flax oil is, hands down, your best option. It's good for your heart and cholesterol levels. Like fish oil, it's anti-inflammitory, which is what helps your joins. It can be a bit expensive, but when it comes to your health, it's worth it.
