ahh, another protein dilemma.

meat is not the ONLY source of protein, you know... the meat industry has done a pretty good job of brainwashing people into thinking they need tremendous amounts of protein. because of this, most people will get more than enough protein into their daily diet.

protein can be found in vegetables, legumes, grains, fruits, nuts and seeds, and the numerous soy products on the market today.

so in response to your question: no, my husband, my son, and i have not experienced any hair loss.

EDIT: i apologize. i didn't know you were actually experiencing this hair loss. in all honesty, i thought you were being a smart-butt. sorry!

typical hair loss is about 40-120 strands everyday.

did you first experience this hair loss when you decided to cut out every meat but fish? perhaps you're going through an emotional, stressful event in your life right now? there are many factors that can contribute to hair loss, including heredity, age, illness, etc.

if you're concerned about not getting enough nutrients as being the culprit, then include lots of raw fruits and veggies into your diet. a good whole food supplement is SuperFood plus by Richard Schulze. it contains only wild harvested and organic herbal ingredients and gives you more than your daily rda of vitamins a (beta carotene), b1, b2, b3, b6, b12 and c. it also includes iron, zinc, iodine and vitamin c complex nutrients, such as rutin, hesperidin, and bioflavinoids.

best wishes!

No, I get plenty of protien from soy, tofu, nuts, legumes, and beans. Two misconseptions about protien is that you have to get enough. Not true, your body produces enough protien naturally by conversion just like amino acids. Extra protien simply helps your metabolism. Secondly, people think meat is the only place to get protien. Doctors recommend that you get a variety of different types of protien such as from soy, whey, milk, nuts, ect. Getting protien from one source doesn't help your body at all. Even if you do decide to eat meat you should get your protien from a variety of sources and not meat alone.

Okay, I personally have, but it also had to do with my giving birth to a child. Two days ago I read about how it was due to your body sort of detoxing and regenrating, by getting rid of the old and slowly making way for the new (as in since you're no longer eating meat and all its toxins)! Still reading up on this, so......

Hey, even I am facing, a similar situation.....but not sure the hair lose is because of vegan diet.

Step 1. GET YE TO THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE! Lots of things cause thinning hair, some are no big deal ( had a stressful month at work?), some are a huge deal (diabetes). Veganism is awesome, but no guarantee of perfect health.
Step 2. if its nothing serious, make sure you're getting enough iron and B vitamins. Maybe schedule an appointment with a veg-friendly registered dietitian.

Sounds to me like you're not eating your veggies. You need vitamins for hair growth, especially vitamins B5 and B6. But also A, C, E, Biotin, Niacin and B12. Vitamins (except for B12) are easy to get from vegetables and fruit. They are very important for your health in general, not just hair.. You also need minerals like selenium (grains, broccoli) and calcium (sesame seeds, tofu, beans, grains...) silica (green vegs, rice, soybeans)...

I'm a vegan and the only suppl. I take is B12. I get the rest from my food. I eat lots of vegs and fruit. I used to have problem with hair loss long ago, I wasnt vegan back then. I dont have that problem now. Actually my hair seems to be even thicker and is long.

Try eating more raw fruit and vegetable.s Maybe you should also take vitamin+minerals supplement especially for hair/skin/nails? There are many versions of those.

But I think as long as your diet is varied, as a vegan you can be healthier than an average meat eater. I doubt that protein is the issue here, since it can so easily be found in beans and soy.

It could also be a medical condition, or something genetic, maybe you should see a doctor just in case?

Good luck!

I've read that strees on the body is actually the most likely cause of hair loss, not vitamin deficincies. So if you've lost alot of weight rapidly, workout too much,or just put your body through too much that may be the cause.

Not anymore than I did as an omnivore - about 50-100 strands a day. My hair is shiny and healthy, btw, a lot nicer than it was when omnivorous.

One likely cause is Vitamin A toxicity, especially if you are supplementing. If yor palms are orange, that could be the problem.
Most people get way too much protein. It should be about 12 to 15% of your diet. The max amount of protein thats healthy for your kidneys is about half your body weight in grams, anything above is undue stress.
Check your shampoo for sodium lauryl sulfate and ingredients like it. many people are allergic to it and it can cause hair loss.
Biotin and silica can promote hair growth. Hope this info helps.
