Then why do you have meat substitutes like Soya and Quorn.

Sgt Moneybags. Eating meat is not cannibalism. Eating a member of the same speices is cannibalism. Eating a member of another is natures food chain at work

Mainly for protein intake. But isn't itso great when you get a nice juicy steak off the grill and throw it onto a plate?

Source(s):
Not eating meat is a choice. Eating meat is an instinct.

They even have meat free ham for sandwiches. Hypercritical or what?

Maybe "don't like meat" isn't the only reason.

Go work in a Kosher slaughterhouse for a summer, then come back and ask the question again.

No you can't but some of nutrients are also available from substitutes.

yeah and what about vegetable rights. they don't eat meat cos they don't like the killing of animals. But vegetables have rights to grow in the ground.

The thing with meat is not so much the taste it is the texture and Quorn and Soya do have a different texture and even taste overall. The texture is denser than vegetables and therefore gvies you a sense of fullfilment that maybe a carrot wouldnt and quorn alone doesnt actually taste of anything at all...the idea is to add spices and other veges to make sure the meal tastes good. Quorn chilli is fantastic. Also quorn is much healthier substitute for meat eaters.

I think it's a bit dumb. I'm definitely a carnivore - I love a nice big juicy piece of meat!

sorry - i disagree.

i have never liked the texture of meat - even as a baby. i find that the texture of soya and quorn based meat substitutes are a lot easier for me to cope with. no gristly bits or stray bits of bone.

u may not understand, but that's because u don't have a problem with the taste or texture of meat. i don't judge your eating habits, so please don't judge mine !!!

It's because some of us don't like the process that meat production involves (steroids, hormones etc) and the cruelty involved. Soya and quorn are good sources of protein for us.
If you can't substitute the real thing why do Ann Summers sell so many vibrators.

Not all vegetarians don't like meat. Some make the choice to not eat it, because they don't agree morally with killing animals. And not all vegetarians eat those substitutes because they taste like meat, but because they enjoy the soya or quorn as it is... although most veggies I know don't like the 'fake' meat and don't buy it.

Some vegetarians don't like meat.

Other do, but don't like the idea of killing and eating animals. So they use the meat substitutes.

It sure ain't the real thing, but they can eat it with a clear -ish conscience.

I've not got much time for veggies, I think it's hugely egotistical to adopt a gimmicky, unnatural diet in a world where so many don't have any choice at all in what they eat. But I quite like quorn and it's very versatile. But the problem with soya is that it is very environmentally unfriendly - a lot of rain forest and natural habitat is being destroyed for soya production.

Who said Vegetarians don't eat meat because they don't like the taste?
the majority of vegetarians aren't vegetarians simply because of the way the food tastes.
They like sausages, but don't like the crap that goes into it.
They like turkey, but don't like they way they're farmed and then killed for christmas
They may like beef and onion pies, but don't like the thought of eating cows.
Soya & Quorn are helping them maintain a life in which they can eat quite ordinarily but without any animal products being harmed in the process of their foods.

Some vegetarians have an ethical problem with eating meat "If it has a face I won't eat it" as a result the idea of eating soya meat is a not starter as it still reminds them of meat.

Why are meat eaters so obsessed with Vegetarians?
you like to eat something that has suffered & died. others posses a conscience.

Most vegetarians and vegans didnt quit eating meat because they dislike the taste, but because they dislike the fact that a living being had to be tortured and slaughtered for a meal. Alo because meat makes you sick!
Soy is a compassionate and tasty replacement for meat, it is NOT meat. Doesnt matter how you prepare it and what you call it, soy is NOT meat. I dont even make a connection between meat and vegan frozen burgers.. Meat is dead flesh, and soy products are plant protein- So in what way is it wrong?

"You can't substitute the real thing."

Soy beans are just as "real" as meat. I'm not dreaming it. Its really here. Unless you mean " real flesh". In that case you are right, vegan substitutes are not real flesh. Which is the point with vegan food.

Their all weird - If we were not supposed to eat animals then why are they made of meat?

I dont like meat cause its disgusting to me. I vomit easly, if I bite into chicken cartilage.

if anyone would saw what they put into meat, no one would eat that. they put chicken legs and heads in a blender - thats your hot dogs.

and the worst meat is when animal was suffering before killed. that kind of meat isnt healthy for human.

I think quorn and soya taste better than meat I choose to become vegetarian because I don't like cruelty to animals.

As a vegetarian I have to eat more chocolate as it has iron in it which I don't get from meat and chocolate is a great (and tasty) substitute

Smiles

I just have to add: Humans are made of meat too!!

I wonder: would we all still have the same opinion if another, more intelligent species suddenly appeared and started factory farming and eating us, based on the same justification we use to eat animals...?

Because,it's not meat!

because we need the nurtrients and most of it doesnt taste anything like the real thing

there are many reasons why people choose to become a vegetarian. could be political, religious, health reasons, etc etc etc
Others like me, hate the taste of meat and wouldn't touch a meat substitute that tastes like meat with 10 foot pole!

a lot of vegetarians r vegi coz dey dont like the thought, or they think its cruel, or they can't stomach the texture etc. not jus they dont like meat! i used 2 luv meat, i am vegi now, i have been 4 3 years. i cant stand the thouht of eating somethink that used to be alive! as it happens i dont like quorn, and i have to have some soya stuff like soya milk as it is healthier and i am slightly allergic 2 milk! lol!

The use meat substitutes to get protein.

It's just more variety of protein rich foods from non-animal sources. Nothing wrong with that - people want to eat it because for so many reasons they don't want to eat meat so it's just made for people who want to eat a greater variety of food not made out of meat.

The Chinese have been making 'meat-substitutes' from gluten and soy protein for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years. It's nothing new. Some people might call these products 'meat substitutes' - most who eat them just call them FOOD, simple as that.

Soya is not a meat-substitute - it's just a plentiful and decent protein rich food in its own right and you can make lots of different products out of it just as you can make lots of different products out of meat.

So, you can substitute the 'real thing' if you want to... just because you CAN if you WANT TO.

Well I don't eat meat because I don't like the taste or texture of it - Other people choose to call me vegetarian. I also do not like meat substitutes, because to me they look and taste like meat.

My sister doesn't call herself a vegetarian, she just doesn't like meat, like I don't like green beans.

There is so much crap put into meat these days. I never liked red meat and only ever ate chicken and fish from a young age and now due to medical reasons i cant eat any meat at all because it makes me so sick.

I think Quorn is great. I can make great dishes that all the family can enjoy. If i have friends over for dinner at least i have something on my plate that resembles what they are eating. So at least i'm not sitting there while they are all enjoying a roast looking at the brown goo on my plate.

When meat substitutes were first introduced onto the market over 100 years ago in the west, they were made so that people who were changing over to a vegetarian diet, could get enough protein, as other protein foods such as nuts, were very expensive & not readily available. Today, meat substitutes are easier to prepare & very versatile in a busy world. What is the problem with it? I personally use legumes & nuts for protein which is a far superior form of protein than that from animals. To a vegetarian, eating an animal is akin to cannibalism. Sorry devout meat eaters, but that's the bottom line, apart from the fact that the vegetarian diet is by far a much healthier diet than meat. As for saying that growing soy is less environmentally friendly than meat-eating. The fact is that it takes much less land to feed the population with plant foods than it does to raise animals to feed the population. More people can be fed per acre on plant foods than with animal foods. One cow per acre = thousands of plants per acre feeds many more people than one cow! Hmmm?
