Replacing bacon in baked beans recipe?

I have a great recipe for baked beans, but it calls for bacon as a major flavoring. I am having a BBQ with vegetarians in attendance and want to know if there is a feasible substitute? Any help??

try adding some smoke flavouring. I use Tone's liquid smoke, made in Des Moines IA. it has a hickory barbeque flavour and comes in a 6 oz and a 32 oz and I use it in a lot of dishes to give extra character, particulary beans or mushroom risotto. good luck

The smoky flavor can be replaced with a drop of Liquid Hickory Smoke found in the condiment isle or cook your beans according to recipe and remove the bacon before serving.

Use Liquid smoke..DELICIOUS BAKED BEANS
For every pound of canned of your favorite baked beans, add:

Ingredients:
2 tablespoon Heinz tomato catsup
1 tablespoon sorghum (or molasses, if you can't get sorghum)
dash dry mustard
1/8 teaspoon COLGIN NATURAL LIQUID SMOKE
2 tablespoon brown sugar
? cup chopped onion or 1 tablespoon instant minced onion
1 teaspoon COLGIN WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE
1-2 tablespoon brandy or sherry

Instructions:
Combine all ingredients together in a corning ware (or equivalent) dish. Bake at 350F for at least one hour. Stir every 20 minutes.

I was going to suggest all-natural liquid smoke, but it looks like everyone was way ahead of me! If you use worcestershire sauce make sure you use a brand that does not contain anchovies (The Colgin kind mentioned in the recipe above is veg-friendly). Please, please do not make the recipe with bacon and then take out the bacon before you serve it to your vegetarian friends. If they found out they would no longer be your friends, I assure you!

Morningstar Farms makes really good fake bacon strips that are flavorful and easy to cook. You can buy them at most grocery stores. Look for the green boxes in the frozen section.

I feel liquid smoke would be too strong to include. Try roasting your onions, and peppers, or toss in a chopped chipotle to give earthy smoke and kick. to replace that all so lovely flavor and mouth feel of pork fat, try a touch of cornstarch, or use some currant or raspberry jam to replace half the brown sugar or molasses. The pectin will help thicken and roll the liquid better.

Just dont put any meat at all in it. I like to add onions and brown sugar to mine and its GREAT!

Goya makes this powder called hamon...try that....it is meat free but check the pack to see if anything else in it may be unwanted.

There are some really tasty soy hot dogs on the market, with really smoky flavor. Cut them up into chunks and add them instead of the bacon. They WILL do the job!

I saute diced onions and diced green peppers in my baked beans. I also add mustard, brown sugar and bbq sauce to give them a kick. No bacon and they are really good.

Hrm. Until you said "major," I was going to suggest butter. Usually, when a bit of bacon is called for, the recipe just wants a flavourful fat -- and butter usually does that rather nicely. Buttered baked beans also don't sound that bad...

Beware, too, the liquid smoke and fake bacon ideas. I don't touch meat-_flavoured_ stuff, and know a lot of other vegetarians who don't. I don't eat meat largely because I find it gross; hell if I want some sort of processed what-not trying to imitate it -- still gross. So, unless you know your vegetarian guests are of the really non-finicky variety, ixnay on the fake bacon &c, I think.

Maple baked beans are great, too...
