Should I refrigerate mangos? How do you eat them?!
Should I refrigerate mangos? How do you eat them?
They were on sale. Should I peel them, slice them, eat them like an apple?
Answers:
You can refrigerate them. I have a whole crate of them in mine now and they are doing fine.
Do NOT eat them like an apple unless you want a whole mouthful of bitterness. The way I do it is cut the mango into three pieces vertically. Put the seed piece aside. Then cut the fruit, not the peeling, of the other two like a grid then eat the pieces. They should come off fairly easy. When you get to the seed you can always eat off the fruit then throw away the seed.
Mangos do not need to be refigerated, but you can. Peel off the skin and eat the yellowish-orange flesh. There is a bid pit in the middle so be careful of that.
Refrigerate them (i) if you want to have them chilled, or (ii) if they are really soft as they may go bad before you can eat them all. If they are soft to the touch, they are probably really ripe. Firmer mangoes are good too, but not too firm. They shouldn't be hard, just firm with a little "give".
Peel the mango with a sharp knife. It has an elongated seed so you can't core it like an apple. Start by making small slices on one side then continue till you feel the hard seed. Then switch to another side. When you're familiar with the shape of mango seeds, then you will be better able to make bigger slices.
For the record, mangoes are good on their own or with ice cream. You can also make smoothies with them.
Enjoy!!
I prefer to peel them and slice them up.
Mangoes have a very big core in the middle.
If they are already ripe refrigerating them will prolong their shelf life.
They are great pureed in the blender with a little sugar, ice, and rum. Delicious! You can even add a little milk or cream for a creamy confection.
i peel my mangoes when it is still a little hard. I don't like it fully ripe, too much juice everywhere. After peeling the skin, use a sharp knife to cut the mango into pieces. Careful cutting around the large pit in the middle. After cutting, have fun eating it.
Mangoes can be refrigerated if you plan on eating them after a couple of days. If you keep them out in the heat for too long, they become all squishy. Since we are from India, we know all about mangoes. the best way to eat them is to peel them, slice them lengthwise (making the knife go all the way to the pit), and then cut them the other way to make them come out. Then, we cut them up again and eat them with a fork. Vanilla ice cream on top tastes fantastic. You don't have to cut them up into little pieces if you don't want to, you can just eat them like orange slices. Be careful though, they are very juicy! With the new mangoes coming in from India (they weren't allowed before for some reason), everybody will go crazy over them because they are AMAZING. Hope you enjoy them in this terrible heat!
Refrigeration - depends on how ripe they are. A mango should be about the firmness of a peach. If it's harder, leave it out or put it in a paper bag to ripen. Once ripe, keep in the refrigerator to keep from spoiling.
The easiest way to cut a mango is to slice it in 1/2 lengthwise close to the pit. Now score the interior right up to the skin (into squares). Now, invert the skin and the fruit chunks will "pop up" almost like a porcupine! Now you can just slice the chunks right off the skin. Repeat on the other side. The remaining flesh can be peeled and cut from the pit. I find that there's less mess this way, as mangos are very juicy. Most restaurant kitchens use this method. (This is also a good way to cut avocado chunks)
you can refrigerate them. or you can peel them, slice them, or eat them like an apple
