Why is it that so many vegansveggies think all eggs become chickens?!

Question:

Why is it that so many vegansveggies think all eggs become chickens?

The FACT is they must be fertile eggs to become chicks. The eggs you get in the grocery stores and health food stores arent fertile. You could have them under a hot red light forever and there would be no chick.

Of course, the vegan stance of not eating anything from animal holds true. Fertile or not, its not a vegan thing to do.

But I do not see the problem with vegetarians not eating eggs... just an FYI, guys, not meant to be mean.

DITTO to those who are speaking out against the cruelty forced upon the poor chickens. GOOD FOR YOU!

Another point- Many of us animal rightists believe in no human interference. So it is to be expected that there would be those of us who would not believe in taking eggs from mothers (which we are supporting when we purchase eggs).

Well, you answered your own question. Most vegetarians do not want to eat *any* animal products, and that includes unfertilized eggs.

Most vegetarians and vegans, such as myself, are against eating eggs because of the cruel way some chickens are forced to lay the eggs. Simple as that.

I saw that also, I'm vegan, but I kno better than that XD

As others have said, egg production is one of the worst animal rights abuses within factory farming. And with free range eggs...sometimes they are fertilized. I've seen even regular eggs from the supermarket fertilized. A friend of mine found an eyeball in his scrambled eggs. Someone on this site mentioned finding a half-formed bloody chick in her egg once. It's not foolproof.

Eggs contain pretty much everything needed to create a chicken except for the missing DNA. They're basically a chicken's period, and that's something a lot of people, even non-vegetarians don't want to eat.

Most vegetarians DO eat eggs, realizing that if they are not fertile, they could never make life. Vegans do not eat them, but for the same reasons they wont use honey or drink milk, etc... they use NO animal products and eggs are undeniably an animal product.

I've seen more meat-eaters claiming that vegetarians are hypocritical for eating eggs, since they are "baby chickens"... to which I always respond that most eggs would never become chickens.

Regardless of this fact, the egg industry is inherently cruel. Chickens are kept in extremely cramped quarters, often with no natural light (only artificial), in wire cages causing foot deformations, etc. Their beaks are seared off so they don't peck each other to death. When their prime egg-laying time is done, they are sent to slaughter. For this reason, I only buy cage-free eggs... and that's only when my own 2 backyard free-range hens stop laying for whatever reason.

I don't think *many* do, as I've only rarely heard that sentiment. But I've encountered a couple of people who did, and it was annoying, since (as we both know), it wasn't true. But they were both vegan for religious reasons, and were pretty sheltered as to how the world works. All of the other vegans or vegetarians I've encountered avoid eggs for other reasons, or if fertilization *is* a concern, they realize it is only a possibility and they don't think every egg is fertilized and will hatch into chickens - they're just not taking chances. My personal reasons for avoiding them have nothing to do with whether the eggs are fertilized or not, so it's a moot point for me anyway.

It's not that we are stopping a chick from hatching, the hen laying the unfertile egg has to live in a small cage with 5 other hens pecking her feathers out and she is made into chicken soup when her egg production slows (about 2 years vs. 10 years for an unstressed chicken). The laying chickens that are male are ground up, gassed or smothered to death shortly after being hatched because they can't be used to lay eggs and why feed a rooster? I eat eggs from my father in laws chickens, I know they live a decent life.

Do you know what happens when a bird lays an egg?

Whether it is fertilized or not.... the chicken will still think it is her chick...

Also, egg laying hens aren't treated any better than broiler (eating) chickens... And I don't want to support that in any way...
