Looking for a good vegan pizza crust recipe?!
Looking for a good vegan pizza crust recipe?
I love amy's cheeseless pizza and grew up Italian...my family made lots of traditional italian comfort foods... but its been forever since I've made homemade pizza and those all used animal products.
Primarily looking for a crust recipe but would love suggestion or abstract pizza recipes like a vegan mexican pizza. thanks guys and gals, -VC

Oh, yeast free, that's good, because I never use yeast for mine. I just make a flat bread. Just put some whole wheat flour into a bowl (no I don't measure), add water and make a dough. Knead it until it firms up enough. Roll or press it out on a floured surface. add toppings, and throw in the oven. Add some oil or brush on some oil (extra virgin olive oil) for a crispier crust. Bake quickly at a very high temperature. That's it. You can add a little baking powder and baking soda to the flour give it some rise too.
For toppings... anything goes. Try buying some of those dried chinese mushrooms, soak them ahead of time and chuck them on there too. For cheese flavour blend some nutritional yeast, Bragg, and cashews and dollop some onto the pizza.
2-2.5 cups all purpose white flour, preferably unbelached, pls additional as necessary
1(1/4 ounce) package quick acting or rapid rise yeast
1 teaspoon salt
.5 teaspoon sugar
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons very warm water
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
in large bowl, combine 1.5 cups of the flour, the yeast, salt and sugar. with a wooden spoon, stir in the warm water and oil. stir vigorously until well mixed. gradually add enough of the remaining flour to make a firm, soft dough. turn out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for about 8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. shape the dough into a ball. cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 10 minutes. dough is ready to be shaped and rolled as directed in recipe.
i made this pizza crust and a sauce (if you want the recipe, message me). it was awesome! even my omni family loved it. i know what you mean, i live in an italian household. i got tired of watching them eat all the great foods i used to be able to eat so i went out and found : vegan italiano. which is where i got the above recipe from. its awesome, you should get it. :)
Vegan Pizza Dough
3-3 1/2 cups flour
2 1/2 ounces fast rising yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup water, very warm
2 tablespoons olive oil
1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
2.In large bowl, combine flour, yeast, and salt. Add warm water and olive oil, knead about 5 minutes or until mixture is well combined and forms a ball. Let dough sit for 10 minutes in a warm place.
3.Roll out dough and fit to oiled cookie sheet or pizza pan. Place in oven and bake for approximately 10 minutes or until very slightly browned.
4.Remove from oven and let cool. Add pizza toppings of your choice. Return pizza to oven and bake approximately 10-20 minutes or until cheese is melted. Cool, slice, and serve.

Being a former chef and a partime vegetarian, I ama diabetic, I lke to make a yeast free one with whole wheat flour and a bit of baking powder.
I ate at a very good veggie restaurant one time and they used a nut and chickpea combination held together with dry roasted pitas crumbled and bound with hummus.
Mind you it was araw veggie pizza with tomatos, and other veg, quickly sautes and sprinkled witha soya type mozzerela, no dairy, very nice, but was eaten with a knfe and fork.
What? Every conventional pizza crust recipe I've every used is basically flour, salt, water, olive oil and yeast. How is that not vegan?
It is the topping choices that make pizza not-vegan.
