Is there a healthy way for a vegetarian to gain weight?!

Question:

Is there a healthy way for a vegetarian to gain weight?

I recently became a vegetarian and I have been loosing too much weight! I have always been kinda skinny and I have very fast metabolism. I have been told to eat a lot of sweets. But what are healthy things I can eat or do to gain weight? Are there certain types of food I should eat more of? Thanks! :)

Answers:
Don't eat a lot of sweets unless you want your teeth to rot! And stay away from junk food--even if you're skinny, it's still not good for your heart and arteries.

I've had similar problems keeping weight on in the past. You're probably not taking in as many calories as you used to. Also, maybe you're more active or hitting a growth spurt. Lots of times when people first become vegetarian, they just cut out the meat, but don't really replace it with anything. Like they eat mostly salads, or vegetable stir fries, vegetable pastas, baked potatoes, etc. These are all great for you, but you need fat and protein as well as fruits and veggies to fulfill your caloric needs. Anyway, to gain weight in a healthy way, eat more calorie-dense foods. Stuff like beans, tofu and tempeh, fake meats, olive oil and olives, quinoa, avocados, hummus, nuts and nut butters, and seeds. These are sources of healthy fats and protein. Stay away from low-fat versions of products. They're often chock full of strange chemicals and sugar anyway.

Make sure you're eating at least 3 meals a day plus a snack (more if you're hungry)--and don't skip breakfast! Lots of times if you skip it, you won't be hungry for lunch.

Check out this website to determine your calorie needs. They also have info for gaining weight healthily.

I would make sure that you're not losing the weight because of something non-vegetarian related (hyperthyroidism possibly).

If it is because of your vegetarian diet, you should count your calories and make sure you are eating enough for your height, weight, age, and activity level. Most likely you aren't, because you are losing weight. However, if you want to gain weight, take the number of calories you should be eating per day (lets say 2000) and add 500 (2500 a day).

Just add more fruits, veggies, whole grains, etc. to your diet.

Good luck!

Eat your meat!

I once ate a census taker's liver and fava beans with a nice Chianti.

yes i can tell u one way if u like start having banana milk shake everyday in the morning and if u have started losing weight allof a sudden pl consult a doc because u might be having thyroid problem ok

Don't eat a lot of sweets unless you want diabetes! If you're having trouble getting enough calories, try eating products from Amy's Organics. They're all totally vegetarian and chock full of calories, plus they're very nutritious.
