Vegitarian?!

Question:

Vegitarian?

Ever since i saw the heartbreaking videos on PETA's website, ive promised myself not to ever eat meat again. I havent eaten any meat including fish for 3 weeks. The thing is that my family doesnt know that ive gone vegitarian. I told my mom the first week i was on my new diet but she laughed said i was cute and gave me a hamburger.(which i didnt eat) How can i tell my mom an dad that im seriously gone vegitarian and how can i get them to spend some extra money on food that i can eat?

Answers:
Don't take it for granted that your parents are going to be angry with you...however, don't take it for granted that they will be happy.

I have a friend who was trying to become vegetarian. When her parents found out, they gave her $200 to stop.

I personally think that was a thoughtless way to deal with the situation. You can't buy people's morals. I also personally think that vegetarianism is the right way to go...I agree with you. More and more people are starting to realize the horrors of the meat industry. I am proud of you!

If your parents truly respect what you feel and just want you to be happy, then they would not mind you being a vegetarian. In fact, they will be proud. Just keep in mind that you won't be able to keep your vegetarianism a secret forever.

Discuss your decision with your parents. Make sure you don't forget to point out all the good reasons that your decision stands on. Tell them that you being vegetarian will not affect their lifestyle either.

Also, reassure them that it is not a harmful step. Many people misunderstand vegetarianism and think that it is harmful to a healthful body, especially because of the lack of protein. What they don't know is that there are immense amounts of supplements and alternative foods that fulfill the need for protein and other essentials that a vegetarian diet doesn't cover.

Good luck! Hey, you never know...your parents just might decide that vegetarianism is the right way to go for your whole family! =)

ummm. hate ta tell ya. but MEAT is very EXPENSIVE. not buying it is CHEAPER. so you will actually be saving money. vegetables and fruit are not that much money. good luck

Just keep avoiding meat, and be serious when you explain why you are a vegetarian. Show that it is important to you. Find some info on a veg site about healthy vegetarian kids (how old are you btw?) and print out for your parents to read. Also make sure you eat healthy and stay healthy, that is what your parents want, Im sure.
I think it's great news, so good for you!

btw, that adorable cow is one of the cutest images I saw here- :)

It's only the meat alternatives that are expensive. A vegetarian diet is actually cheaper than an omnivorous one.

Meals you can all eat together- tonnes of vegetarian pasta dishes- spaghetti napoletana, spinach and ricotta tortelini with tomato & basil sauce, vegetable lasagne, spinach canneloni. All you need for a vegetarian dish the whole family can enjoy is a box of pasta pieces and a tomato and basil sauce.

MOST IMPORTANT- read up on your nutrition requirements: http://www.vegetarian.org.uk/factsheets/...

When kids tell their parents they want to vegetarian, parents have this image of their kids turning into scrawny weaklings. You need to stay on top of what you're eating. Instead of getting your mum to buy loads of crisps for the family, ask her to buy less, and to get you some trail mix. Instead of chocolate bars, ask for chewy nut bars. Ask your mum to serve at least one portion of veg with each meal (which she should be doing for family health anyway!), and try to drink a glass or orange juice as part of your breakfast and eat a few pieces of fruit.

Veggie burgers are cheap. Next time you go shopping with your parents, get some frozen veggie food like mexican bean burgers, vegetarian mince, etc. The frozen stuff is cheaper than the refridgerated stuff and keeps forever.

It may sound corny, but it may be worth spending more time with your mum and helping her cook, maybe buy/get from the library a vegetarian cooking book so you can have fun together learning new things, your mum will love the extra pair of hands and company!

Good luck and well done for making a difference :)
