I want to be a vegetarian?!

Question:

I want to be a vegetarian?

i considered and being one but im not sure how to tell my parents i really want to do this but i dont know how toi annonce it help urgent!

Answers:
I know how hard it is. I waited a month to tell mine, and when I did I found that they didn't react the way I tought they would. Of course I was older and able to buy and cook my own food.

I would gather all the info you can about vegetarianism. People worry the most about protien, so get the information that shows you know where to find alternative and healthy sources of protien. B-12 is another concern, but if you are drinking milk, eating eggs, etc. you will get enough. It is also in fortified cereals, soy milk, etc. Gather info on health benifits, lower cholesterol, less chance of heart disease, etc.

Go to the library and take out books, and check out websites.

Next time they offer you meat, just say, "No thanks, I'm a vegitarian."

Ok, your parents should understand what you want and what you believe. One night at dinner just say that I have decided and I want to be a vegetarian, they will understand that this is what you want!

Mmmmmm, Veggies!

vegs yummmmmmmm

wait until you've just come back from some place and just announce it, if they say they won't let you then explain that it is important to you and that you are going to do it regardless of their opinions and that it would be a lot healthier if they would help you out and support you. good luck! You've made a GREAT decision!!

just say, Howdy folks ( maybe not that way ) LOL but tell them your going to try to eat healthy foods To gain more energy & feel better, dont CUT them down for eating MEAT, cus you want support as well, right? Great question.

well if they offer you meat just say no thanks, i think il have some more potatoes or somthing. and then after doing that for like a month, if they offer you meat just casually say your a vegetarian. good luck!

It's good to break it to them slowly. Instead of telling them, show them you're interested in health by having reading material(not Veg) laying around.
Talk about what you've learned (not veg stuff YET). Start with digestive tract function, what vitamins do, RDA's of the 6 types of nutrients. Then they'll see that your decision to go veg is an informed decision.

Yeah, It can be hard... not all parents will just accept their child becoming a vegetarian. They are set on believing that meat is SOOO good for you...lol.
When I broke the news to may parents, I just flat out told them... I was like Dad, "I want to be a vegetarian..." .He was like "uhh ok...". But when my mom found out... she wasn't as accepting... she was worried that I was going to get sick.

You should learn about vegetarian nutrition, really know your stuff... that way when your' parents ask questions, You will be able to respond by giving them a well thought out, educated answer. They would probably feel more confident about the whole thing if you knew what you were talking about.
I'll give you some links.
My suggestion for telling them would be to cook a good vegetarian meal... like a nice healthy, hearty meal that would satisfy a meat- eaters appetite. Over dinner explain to them why you cooked for them that night. Tell them that you would like to become a vegetarian, and give them some information about it... Peta has this "Vegetarian Starter Kit" You can order it for free at the link I'll give you. Maybe let them look through it... And also explain exactly why you want to be a vegetarian... When you present your "argument", present it from a health point of view... not an ethical one (honestly my parents wouldn't care much about killing animals... They do care about me being healthy) So make sure you really push vegetarianism for health reasons... But if you want you could throw in some stuff about how animals are treated. Just so they know exactly how you feel, otherwise they may try to sneak some meat into your spaghetti...lol. Good Luck and I hope that they understand.

->> A little suggestion... don't try to win your parents over with tofu... If they are anything like my parents... they won't even touch the stuff :] Try a bean dish or something... maybe make a thick stew with some veggies on the side.... Or Make something with Potatoes... everyone loves potatoes, And they fill ya up.... Definitely make something filling.

And also... since you will be a new vegetarian, just thought that I would tell you that A LOT of foods have hidden animal ingredients... Here is a link to a list of animal ingredients.

cause you will need to get into the habit of reading ingredient labels.

Good luck, Hope this stuff helps you.

Just be really random about it. My parents are divorced, so i had to say it twice, and it really wasn't that bad. Just be sure to do your research and be prepared to tell them how you're going to get your protein, iron, and other nutrients they may ask you about. Any time is fine, driving in the car, at the grocery store, watching TV
