How do we strengthen our bones?!

Question:

How do we strengthen our bones?

I was doing some yard work today and when I went to pick up a heavy tree limb that fell in my yard, it felt like my arm was going to snap. I don't know if it is me, but my bones feel very brittle. I am a vegetarian, what vegetable can make my bones strong?

I read online about a vegetarian who broke his arm just by playing the drums. His exact quote was, "I've been told to eat meat and change my diet (I've been a vegetarian for 16 years) [because] it's making my bones weak. I never thought I'd break a bone from playing my drums too hard/too long."

Thanks for the tips everyone, I just had my old lady go buy me a gallon a milk from the store. I can still drink milk and be a vegan, as long as the milk comes from free-range cows.

Your arm was weak because you have no b/f anymore and all that self-play is giving you RSI

Has even the chimp lost interest ?

Drink milk or take calcium supplement if it is not an illegal substance.

excersize and milk products

Vitamin D,fruits and veggies, calcium(not from milk,go with dark green veggies)

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to drink animal milk to improve your bone strength. Human's are the only animal that drink milk beyond infancy, and it is seriously not healthy. Dairy is not the only way to get calcium, and it is often a high-fat or high sugar way. So it is best to stay clear if you're looking for overall well-being.
Bone mass increases until around age 25, so prevention is the best thing. Obviously it's too late for that now, so you'll need to try moderate weight bearing exercise, absolutely no smoking and eating plenty of the right foods.
You can't benefit from calcium supplements if your hormones are out, or if you don't get other essential vitamins, like Vitamin C, D and K, magnesium, zinc etc. Besides which, supplements are not an ideal way of acquiring nutrients.
Try to eat plenty of calcium rich foods, like sesame seeds, broccolli, cabbage, kale etc. Get a little sunshine everyday, so you body can make Vitamin D, avoid caffeine, and do soem daily exercise! Your body absorbs the calcium from leafy green vegetables much more easily than from dairy products, and you will have less chance of adverse reactions. If you eat a balanced diet, and get some protein too (mushrooms, legumes, tofu) your muscles will help keep your bones in check too.
Getting calcium is one thing, making sure you're healthy enough to absorb it and have it help your bones is another.

Silk has as much or more calcium than milk. And tastes much better in my opinion, but then I've been traumatized by milk before.

Your bones are probably OK but it is your muscles that need to be developed. You should drink milk and eat nuts for the calcium but do exercises for your muscles and lift weights. Go to a gym and they will advise you the best way to go about it. You would not be able to tell if your bones are brittle unless you actualy snap one. There are medical tests to check this.

Milk from free range cows is still not vegan but I always thought that word was kinda ugly anyway...if I had my own cow I would drrink milk every day yummy! As far as for your bones I have one word for ya---GREENS. I have been reading stuff by Boutenkos (rawfamily.com) and they have been raw foodists(no dairy) for over ten years. Two of them are teens and for a while they complained about their teeth. Well their mom did a bunch of research and figured that they eat need to consume 1-2 large bunches of greens per day! Since they don't cook and it is very hard to chew this much they started drinking green smoothies made from 1/2 fruit, 1/2 greens(spinach, kale, weeds, etc) and water. I know this sounds kinda gross but I have been drinking them and they're not bad--really fresh actually. The only downside to them is you really need a vitamix for these things as a regular blender will eventually burn out from making them. But if you really don't want to drink milk(greens in another form really), a vitamix is crucial and they last forever so they are well worth the investment--especially if your talking saving you bones! BTW Pasturized milk should always be boiled before drinking this breaks it down to digestible form since the pasturization kills the natural enzymes.
