I don't think that all meat eaters feel the need to criticise... But of those that do I have found that they generally fall into two camps.

1. Ignorance:

I tend to think of these people as little sheep - they just follow the flock. They generally don't even know why they mock or criticise, they have just seen someone famous mock vegetarianism, or perhaps they've seen a meat advert on TV and believe its gospel!. This group think that vegetarians are weak, or ill and ask "Where do you get your protein?".

These people have no real ability to listen to reasonable arguments about vegetarianism and its benefits and I personally tend to just ignore them. If you react to this type of person, then they come up with absolutely ludicrous arguments for eating meat like: "what would happen to all the cows if we stopped eating them, they would take over", or "God gave us the animals to slaughter and eat, so we should enjoy them"... This list is endless!

2. Guilt:

Perhaps these are the ones that criticise the most! They will generally be more intelligent and know deep down that vegetarianism has many benefits to health, the environment and society but they are too weak minded to leave the 'norm' and become vegetarian. I always quote Einstein, Pythagoras, or Shaw to these kinds of people when they try to mock as they can't argue agains their intelligence :)

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." - Albert Einstein.

"Oh, come! That boot is on the other leg. Why should you call me to account for eating decently? If I battened on the scorched corpses of animals, you might well ask me why I did that."- George Bernard Shaw, (The Vegetarian, 15 January 1898)

"As long as Man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love." - Pythagoras

Sometimes it may also be worth pointing out to these people to stop being so 'narrow' in their viewpoint and that a few Billion Hindu's, Buddhist's and Sikhs and others are completely vegetarian from birth and have been for thousands of years... Eating meat is NOT the norm everywhere!

coz they have no idea what they're missing out on!!!

cuz vegetarians are *******!

I don't

I never mock vegetarians unless they're skinny and complain about the 'cold' all the time when it's 72oF!

I tried being a veggie for three years myself but found myself disguising myself and going to a taco stand to eat carnitas at 3am!
So I guess you could call me a 'Mock Vegetarian'!
(Is that a new dish like Tofurky?)
.

Because they dont understand.

do they? i don't-each to their own i say! whatever floats your boat!

I don,t.Live and let live. Each to their own.

I used to actually leave the tyable when we went out for meals as they were so rotten.(ex veggie) so I understand.Just jealousy as they know it is a far healthier option in life.

I was a vegetarian for like 3 months, but now am back to eating meat, since I was dizzy and needed more of my supplements through meat again. I think they criticize because what they don't know, they judge.. there u go!

Because they are polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases.

Because Vegatarians mock and criticise meat eaters.

I don't.............. each to their own and good on them for sticking to their principals. My brother is vegan and really healthy.

i don't. neither do my meat eating friends. my husband and i are friends with a couple of vegetarians and vegans. you should reword your questions as to why "some" meat eaters do that....

I don't - people can eat whatever they like as long as they dont force their views on to me.

Meat eaters mock us vegie eaters because they do not undetstand that we are healthier and that we are miissing out on the food that they enjoy so very much. and that we re not as strong if we do not partake of the "better protein source" but of course that is not true is it?

I am not a vegetarian by personal choice. There are two types of people that use their choice of lifestyle to get up on a podium and critisize others and I don't make distinctions between the two; One is the vegetarian-bashing non-vegetarians and the other is the non-vegetarian-bashing vegetarians.

Because vegetarians prove that you don't have to eat frankenfood in denial to be healthy. Every omnivore I have ever met has told me they "don't want to know" where their meat comes from, or how it is raised. Seeing a vegetarian slaps them in the face with their own denial. Since they rely on this rationalization and denial for peace of mind, they react with hostility when it is disrupted.

There's just a group of vegetarians/vegans (not literally a group that is together [at least as far as I know]) that can be pretty militant about not eating meat and also a group on the other side (the carnivorous side) that feels passionate enough about eating meat (or has heard a vegetarian say something bad about meat or blah) and it gets them all riled up about it. It's the loudest people of each group running their mouths off, mostly.

I think THEY started IT by not staying home to fix their own food
AND managed to pass LAWS to change our food habits.
We normal people have pointed out all the falsehoods of their demands to change our lives.

I run into this problem constantly, and I find that it's mostly because they don't understand why someone would give something like meat up.

Those people, are usually the ones that have no idea what goes into our livestock/or whats done to them while our farmers are trying to bulk up and grow our animals at lightening speed to meet the demands our society has placed on them.

Just explain to them why you made the choice you made and that you don't mock them for theirs', so they shouldn't mock yours; not that what you do with your life should matter to them.

Why do vegetarians feel the need to think they are better than meat eaters?

to be fair, isn't it a two way road? i've known some pretty ambivalent vegetarians and been called a few choice names about my choice of food....i don't think it's a matter of meat eaters picking on vegetarians OR vice versa...more a matter of people pushing their opinions on other people

Robby has it right. I have seen a few veggies here posting in food and drink forums antagonizing "meat eaters" as well. Being a vegan, I personally don't push it in anyones faces unless they inquire. The trolls however, I cannot explain. Its one thing to say something once. Its another to spam the boards everyday with ridiculous nonsensical irrelevant junk for their own pure amusement.

Outsiders looking in...always have the nerve to judge situations that they THINK they know about when they really do not know anything. Some people just cant accept differences. That is the main reason why u should do what u believe in and what u feel. As I say " Do U!"

To mock and criticise usually is a sign of jealousy, I am an avid meat eater, I luv the stuff, but to all veggies out there, carry on, I love you all x

The reverse applies equally - vegetarians do not just mock, but absolutely condemn meat eaters, often within the pages of Yahoo Answers.

Any chef of reasonable quality will not only be trained in preparation and presentation of food, but also in basic nutrition.

I've given up commenting on the Vegatarian pages on this site - all I get is thumbs down and, frequently, abuse.

All my menus have had an extensive range of vegetarian dishes and my vegetarian food is cooked with the same insight and skill as any meat dish. I do no vegan, as I fear lawsuits in peddling malnutrition.

I will cook what you like to eat. I leave it up to vegetarians to question why the human has teeth that have no other use than to rend meat, and as to why the human body is unable to assimilate two vital amino acids from vegetable protein.

I tried becoming a vegetarian and put on a lot of weight believe it or not. So I would never mock you.

Well the first thing I could not help notice was how much you and " nos " look alike .. you look like sisters .. yet you want to know why meat eaters criticize and mock ..she responds with a bleeped profanity .. perhaps to a meat eater they perceive you hate them .. ..you of course do not hate meat eaters the person .. .. you may hate what they are doing .....on the other hand they do not hate you the person but what you represent .. it is hard to go backwards after you have learned the truth , and hard to see it for those who haven't .. when people are scared they will become defensive .. and act like a scared cat who puffs up to look huge and hisses and may even take a swing at the air to fend off his would be potential attacker .. that is what they do and how they see it .. as an attack they need to ward off .. ..

Well, why do so many Vegetarians act like they are superior human beings compared to meat eaters?

That kind of thing pisses people off. And then they blame anyone from that demographic for the actions of one person, kind of like you're doing.

I think it goes bolth ways. There are some meat eaters that criticise vegetarians and vice versa. I never push my beleifs on anyone as a vegetarian, and expect the same respect in return. Have I met my fair share of obnoious meat eater... yes, but the majority were understanding, even curious, and respectful of my choice.

As I have said before, I find it ironic as omnivores and vegetarians seem to all want the same thing. We want respect and understanding for the choices we make. The freedom to eat as we please without someone criticising our choices.

There are vegetarians and ominvores alike that push thier views on others. I don't think it comes down to the fact that they eat meat or not, it comes down to the fact that they are simply obnoiouxious jerks.
