it'd be hypocritical if a vegetarian continued wearing/using leather and/or fur. i wouldn't look down on those that do, but it defeats the purpose if that specific vegetarian refuses to eat meat b/c they love animals.

it can be difficult to find vegan products. seems the industries can find use for every part of an animal. they sure don't wanna waste that body part-it could bring in some money! it didn't even cross my mind that mine and my husband's wallets and belts were made of leather until i watched the documentary "earthlings"... the minute i realized it, tho', they went in the trash.

shouldnt this be directed at vegans?

I don't wear or use leather :)

i think you mean vegans

I Don't See Why Anyone Would Really Want To.
To Me It's Like Shaving Your Head Bold.
Just Plain Ugly.

And The Fact It's Made From A Pre-Living Thing Makes It Even Worse.
Like Fur.

I am a vegetarian and I don't wear or use leather.

If a vegetarian doesn't eat meat because they don't want animals to suffer they are being hypocritical by wearing animals. Of course they are. Vegans eat no animal produce milk etc. that don't involve the animal being killed. Wearing animals involves the animal being killed so I would like to know why some vegetarians think it is more acceptable to wear animal rather than eat it.

Definitly hypocritical ! . If your worried about animal cruelty , dont you think its bad that they skin cows for leather ????????????? excatly , vegetarains or vegans should have the excat same oppinion.

I don't like the idea but I do wear leather shoes cos I have really bad feet and can't get away with anything else.

I know this is hypocritical, but really, I think I do better by not eating leather producing animals than not wearing leather. Honestly, I would be ok with people eating meat if they would truly limit their intake and had the ocassional serving (actual serving size I mean), if they would buy meat that was not injected with hormones and cows that are allowed to eat grass and actual cow food instead of the garbage they are fed. I feel the biggest problem is factory farms and the treatment of the animals and the farms effect on the environment. People are just glottons and eat way too much meat and eat it at each meal which is not necessary!
To get to my point...the gluttons who eat all of this meat couldn't possibly be using all of the leather it produces. I don't go out and buy leather jackets and have leather seats on my car, but if I like a pair of shoes or a belt that is leather, I buy it and I don't think it has that much of an impact. On the other hand, I don't believe in killing animals JUST for fur or Just for leather...I would never wear fur or leather from say an alligator, or elephant, ostrich, etc. I've just accepted that in our lifetimes we will never see the world adapt to a vegetarian lifestyle, if they're killing these animals for their meat, the least they could do is use as many parts as possible.

its cows skin so no i never where it its disgusting how would u dudes like it if someone killed you and wore your skin i wouldn't like it!

its possible that some vegetarians dont eat meat because they dont like the taste / texture. so wearing leather is not a problem

I guess i am hypocritcial but yes i own leather shoes. I would never buy them for myself but when my parents have bought my leather i shoes i think its worse for them to sit under bed not even having a purpose. I know it doesn't excuse it, but to me we actually shoes are a need (i know, i know, not leather ones) and to eat animal remains is not. I will probly get bad answers for this but i'm not going to lie about anything. I could go on but i don't feel the need to justify myself on this.

I'm veggie - I own 3 leather items & use them occasionally.
(I do have 1 or 2 jeans I bought with a leather label =O) To not do so would be wasteful. They only time I've ever bought leather since being veggie was some used dress shoes.

As the cows are going to be killed for meat eaters to munch on anyway there's little point in the skin just going to waste, although I personally do prefer not to use leather. But when it comes to buying shoes, you can't always avoid it.

People , when you think about leather , you think about cows. ITS NOT JUST COWS BEING KILLED FOR THEIR SKINS!!
DOGS AND CATS ARE ALSO KILLED!!!
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT?

I have no problem wearing leather items .. but I hardly wear a lot of it. There are two points I want to make here...

1) If I throw out the leather belt I purchased 8 years ago because I'm vegetarian, I feel I am disrespecting the animal that was killed and contributed to my life. I'd rather be mindful of the things I buy in future.

2) My leather consumption is incredibly low compared to my potential meat consumption were I still eating it. I used to eay meat two to three times a week - which isn't much - but adds up to a few cows per year if you consider we only eat certain parts of these animals. I'd be lucky to have purchased leather (shoes, belts etc) that came from anywhere near one cow in a 12 year period.. possibly 20 years.

Bottom line, if I were not living in this privilaged society, I would eat meat to survive. I would honour the animals and make sure I used everything I could from them.. leather, food, oil etc. Yes, I'd kill my food myself.

I love animals but at the end of the day, when food is scarce we may need to eat them. That doesn't mean keeping them in enclosed spaces , or putting them through massive stress to kill them (slaughter houses). Honouring life and honouring them in death is why I chose to be vegetarian.. because our commercial meat industry doesn't do any of that.

It depends on why you're a vegetarian. If its because you believe it to be healthier - but not because of animal rights, no problem.

If it's because of animal rights that you're vegetarian, you pretty much know that the leather is a byproduct of a dead animal, not the reason or purpose for which the animal died. (In most cases). Generally the leather is from some sort of animal raised for meat. If the meat is gone, it's an honor to the life of the animal to use it fully.

I don't wear it, and i do agree its hypocritcal. Aty the end of the day if you use leather you are responsible for the death of an animal.

But, the definition of a vegetarian is about diet...the formal defintion used by all major veggie groups is "a vegetarian does not eat meat, fish, poultry or slaughter by-products"

So people, no matter how odd it seems, are able to rightly call themselves veggie and wear leather.

Personally, i think they should change the definition. Until they do, i will not criticise my fellow veggies.

If you want a definition that includes all lifestyle choice about using animal products, then you look to our vegan friends.

Its just as gross as eating meat! I dont wear it or use it.

no, i dont think it is good to use and wear and buy leather

i dont wear any leather.

if someone veggie gets called a hyprocrite because they do use something that is leather or animal tested eg medicine, say that you feel you should be praised for doing what you can, not scolded for what you're not doing.

I Refuse To Sit On Our Leather Couch, Wear Leather Shoes, Or Use A Chamois Leather Out Of The Principle.

Im A Vegetarien/ Recently Turned Vegan.

I am vegan and I don't have anything made of leather or suede or anything like that.

I just wouldn't like to use it.
