I am thinking about becoming a vegan?!

Question:

I am thinking about becoming a vegan?

I am thinking about becoming a vegan after learning more and seeing more information about how much cruelty there is to the animals - yes I am very into PETA but I have been eating meat all this time and now I feel like a hypocrite - I find myself soooo depressed and my heart hurts for all of these poor animals I dont know what to do with myself - but how do i become a vegan? I wouldnt even know what to eat everyday? I am such a picky eater... any ideas?

Answers:
Thats so great that you're considering veganism. It is a right choice that helps animals, people and enviroment. I suggest that you google for recipes and look for more info. There are so many vegan sites.

I eat with more variety now than I ever did as an omnivore, or even as a vegetarian. My advice is learn to cook! There are many quick recipes so dont worry, you dont have to be an expert or anything. I know I wasnt. First month is complicated, but keep learning about food, recipes and ingredients. It really does get easier. The only negative thing is people's ignorant comments. But instead of picking a fight or excusing yourself, just smile a lot, it will drive them crazy.

Fruit and vegetables obviously. - My best friend is vegan. If you are sincere then do it by just doing it. Your grocery store undoubtedly has a vegan section most do now-a-days. So that stuff pluss Veggies and fruits and grains. That'll be it for ya. It is do-able. When I go to visit her the meals she prepares are always awesome and I don't feel like I am missing out on anything.

I've been a vegetarian for 11 years and a vegan for one year. It's easy once you get started. There's a lot too eat.

Chek out vegweb.com

Really good cookbooks- How it All Vegan
In The Garden of Vegan
The Dolce Vegan

It will probably be easier to just be vegetarian first and slowly start going vegan. There's a lot to remember when going vegan- you have to constantly check the labels on EVERYTHING. Look for a good health food store near you. I know they're expensive, but it will give you good ideas.

Don't go vegan all at once! Cut out foods gradually... Start off with the obvious - meat. Then, if you can, work your way onto egg and dairy products. If you live in a developed country, it should be easy to find substitues for animal products.

In addition, check out Mary-Ann Shearer's "The Natural Way". It's a great book and contains wonderful health advice, all realted to a mostly plant-based diet. Especially if you want to become vegan, it's well worth a look!

Good luck!

You know what you people make me mad we are the top of the food chain and we need meat for are bodies to function properly. Ever see a vegan they look like an corps. Plus after we killed the chicken it goes to heaven. What i don't like is the cruilty of testing things on animals.

the best thing you can co is stop watch stuff on tv that bothers you and sinmply go to the meat isle and see the little pagages of meet as food not anamel parts .that is why they are cut like they are of course you well be hard pressed to not see the check wong as anything but a wing of a checken .your not a hipocrite your a caring loving person that has been made to feel bad foe there action

ya don't do it...even vegans are hypocrites they eat all these veggies but how do you think they are fertilized... animal bone meal and other parts. animals are meant to be eaten, at least we don't grab them with are teeth and rip them apart like every other carnivore in the world

Talk to Dr. Sebi over at www.thefigtreeonline.com
he is from Honduras. There is a forum there.

A lady named KARYN is popular in Chicago. She is big on the raw foods diet and teaches classes plus owns 2 restaurants/health food stores. One for cooked food people and the other for raw food folks. Look up Karyn's restaurant in the yellow pages of the yahoo home page.

Another lady has a cable TV show on the topic of natural health and diet. She is Nadine Nance and her phone number is 1-773-324-4372

Good luck

chicken and seafood are great and can be cooked in many healthy and tasty ways

Being vegan takes a good deal of education. I suggest looking up The China Study from Cornell U. Raw foods are also an important part of the vegan diet. They help you maintain energy and give you vitality. Rawfamily.com is a great source for raw food info. The mom, dad, and kids(both teens now) have been vegan raw-foodists for over ten years--for health reasons. Their big thing is green smoothies with real leafy greens--not spirulina. Greens basically replace dairy products in your diet--that is where the cows get it from after all.
Veg is definitely the way to go and for all you meat-eating nay-sayers: GET OFF THIS SITE!

gal_D had some good advice. Definitely check out Sarah Kramer's cookbooks! I haven't made one recipe out of them that I didn't enjoy.

Clearly you are thinking about veganism for moral reasons. I think the person that suggested you go about it gradually is wrong. If you have had a revelation about the morality of consuming animal products, you don't want to go about it gradually! It may sound crazy, but think of it the same as someone who has found faith late in life, or an alcoholic in recovery. When you discover a truth about life, you can no longer ignore it and your life as you knew it has to change. I know the feelings you are talking about from eating meat for many years and your heart hurts. Focus on the positive! That you are changing NOW and you know what's best NOW. Some people go through their whole lives and never realize this. It's not easy, but it doesn't have to be difficult. The web can be your best friend. I know I had trouble with friends who knew me in my "meat-eating days" and couldn't understand the change. They don't have to understand it. If it's YOUR truth and you believe in it, you stick to it! Delve into the internet world of veganism and you will know there are many food options. Peta has a section linked from their site about name brand foods that are "accidentally" vegan. You'd be surprised!

Good luck!

You can start out by eating less meat. Get a vegan recipe book and try making a few vegan meals before you become vegan. There's no need to do it all at once.

You can get a lot of calories out of the following vegan staples as well: soy milk, peanut butter, soy burgers, vegan cereals, etc.
