Is hummus vegetarian?!
Is hummus vegetarian?
didn't know, I've never had it before.
Answers:
Yes, hummus is made of pureed chick peas (garbanzo beans), lemon juice, and tahini (ground sesame seeds) with generally some oil to thin it out. It may have other flavorings as well (cilantro, salt, pepper, roasted red pepper, etc.). It's pretty high and protein and very good with pita bread, pita chips, cucumber slices, etc. It has a slightly acrid taste and not all people like it (especially when compared with more common condiments/spreads like salsa, cream cheese, etc.). Personally, I wouldn't ever eat it plain but it's very enjoyable on some melba toast or good pita chips.
Here are some decent hummus resources, including a recipe if you want to make your own:

yes but its not so tasty
YES!
Yes I believe it's made of chickpeas. Good source of protein. MMMM
Yes, it's just mashed Chickpeas, sesame seed oil and sea salt.
Yes it is a chickpea dip. It is fantastic with falafel (also vegetarian). Fresh is better than store brought.

4 garlic cloves
1 teaspoon salt
two 1-pound 3-ounce cans chick-peas, drained and rinsed
2/3 cup well stirred tahini
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, or to taste
1/2 cup olive oil, or to taste
1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves
2 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted lightly
Accompaniment: Toasted Pita Thins
preparation
On a cutting board mince and mash the garlic to a paste with the salt. In a food processor purée the chick-peas with the garlic paste, the tahini, the lemon juice, 1/4 cup of the oil, and 1/2 cup water, scraping down the sides, until the hummus is smooth and add salt to taste. Add water, if necessary, to thin the hummus to the desired consistency and transfer the hummus to a bowl. In the food processor, cleaned, purée the remaining 1/4 cup oil with the parsley until the oil is bright green and the parsley is minced transfer the parsley oil to a small jar. The hummus and the parsley oil may be made 3 days in advance and kept covered and chilled. Divide the hummus between shallow serving dishes and smooth the tops. Drizzle the hummus with the parsley oil and sprinkle it with the pine nuts. Serve the hummus with the pita.
Falafel
300 g chickpeas
4 tablespoons bulgur
3 garlic cloves
3 tablespoons plain flour
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
3 teaspoons ground coriander
1 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground red chili pepper
1 tablespoon tahini
Soak chickpeas in water to cover for 12 hours.
Boil in large saucepan for about 20 minutes, until soft (or you can use canned chickpeas, if desired).
Drain and blend in food processor to a smooth paste.
Soak bulghur in water to cover for 1 hour.
Crush garlic with salt.
Combine all ingredients except oil.
Shape into balls and shallow-fry until brown (you can deep-fry if you like, or coat lightly with oil and bake until golden).
The yield depends on the size of the falafels you prefer.
Garbanzo beans (chick peas), sesame paste, olive oil, lemon juice, water, garlic and paprika......yum!
Yes, and it's wonderful. If it's some low-quality store brand, double check the label. There's a low fat one here in the UK that uses a yogurt that has gelatin in it. There shouldn't be yogurt in it at all! Just chickpeas, olive oil, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and spices. Unless it's one of the flavored ones like red pepper or roasted eggplant.
yes it is, in fact it is generally vegan as well. If you live near a Trader Joe's try their 3-layered hummus, it is great. I really like their Tomato & Basil Hummus a lot as well. But their Eggplant Hummus tastes a bit bitter, and thats saying something because I like eggplant otherwise. Other stores of course carry hummus but I don't know if the price is comparable to Trader Joe's standards. You can always make your own though, with chickpeas, tahini, lemon, olive oil, and garlic.
Yes, and it is awesome!
Its vegan at that! And the most wonderful food in the world, aside from the avacado of course! :)
I don't know hummus.
Yes. BUT if you are buying it in a pre-made package read the label.
I luv it.
yes it is, my gf and I go through phases of making it obsessively. chickpeas/garbanzo beans, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, some salt...olive oil and a lil fresh water all blended together. I prefer sauteing the garlic in a lil bit of the olive oil first so it has a smoother flavor.
Great with pita, cucumbers or other things =)
Houmous/hummus SHOULD be vegetarian/vegan, but some supermarket own brands sometimes add parmesan cheese to flavour (which is usually vegetarian, but you never know, it may contain animal rennet) the more exotic types of houmous, so make sure you look out for the vegetarian/vegan motif on the box.
Plain houmous should only contain chickpeas, herbs, olive oil, tahini and other vegan ingredients.
Roasted red pepper and lemon&coriander flavoured houmous are usually safe.
