Are you vegetarian?!

Question:

Are you vegetarian?

Please can someone explain to me why when you do not eat meat you buy vegetarian sausages etc but it still tastes like meat, my daughter buys bacon flavoured quorn sausages and it just does not make sense to me. She might as well eat the real thing.

Answers:
yes i am :) i just cant stand the way they treat animals and the way they are slaughtered its wrong and nowadays we dont need meat we have soo many other alternatives too :)

Source(s):
i have been a vegatarian for 14 years

There is nothing nicer than a big juicy medium rare steak with pepper sauce.

no i'm not but i won't eat red meat

its just a meat substitute, tastes like meat but without the animal. thats why she eats it. i wish i was strong enough to be a veggie but i aint got the willpower..id be runnin the kfc after an hour!

i guess it is just the thought of eating something that once lived.

Umm.... because of animals!!! Most vegetarians (myself included) don't eat meat because they love animals too much. I gave up meat after 15 years, so though i liked the taste of it, i didnt want to eat an animal. Therefore, substitutes have been created for those who have given up meat for moral purposes and not because they don't like the taste of it. My favourite dish is spaghetti bolognese made with quorn mince, Yummy!

Your daughter may not want real meat because it stays in your intestines for a long long time. It even putrefies.
Meat eaters should know this.... But I agree with the person who says there "ain't nothing better than a medium rare 2 inch T-bone steak".
In any case - I will always prefer fish.

i am vegetarian and don't eat "meat substitutes" like you i think you might as well eat the real thing, although i will sometimes eat chicken / fish. Too be honest i prefer vegetables, beans, pasta etc.

No but I would love to be a vegetarian, some people dont eat it cos they dont like the taste of meat but for me I hate the thought of killing an animal to eat it. I have tried the Quorn stuff but I think it tastes horrible!!

Very few people are vegetarian because they hate the taste of meat. Most I know are because they do not wish to harm or kill animals - so a "sausage" made out of plant matter has the taste they love without an animal having to die for it.

because she is not eating meat and is not getting the unhealthy fat from the meat. she is eating a vegetable substance. she may like the taste and just does not want the meat, you see what i'm saying? there is a huge difference between the two...just because the flavor is similar does not mean the rest of the product is similar to the real thing at all. just leave her be and let her eat what she wants. at least she is eating healthy unlike alot of people her age :)

maybe she doesn't want to eat, decomposing, animal flesh.

i'm veggie, yes. i don't eat the substitutes though - personally, i don't like the taste/texture of meat, as well as the cruelty side of it.
my sister does though, because she chooses to be veggie to avoid animals being killed for our sake, however, she did enjoy meat before she was veggie.
it's all about personal preference.
people can still taste the meat if they like that, but without the poor animals having to be killed for it. simple really!

I'm not a veggie but my wife is and I've asked her the same question.

She says that is DOES taste different from normal meat, but for her its the issue on HOW the animal was treated. IE, kept in poor conditions, breed to die etc that puts her off eating meat.

Mind you, she still wears leather shoes, has a leather belt & eats Jelly Babies.

Simple -- it tastes good! Great taste without the guilt of being involved in the injury/killing of an animal - the principle of Ahimsa or non-injury, from the Hindu and Bhuddist traditions. Plus you fit in with all the other non-vegies around you!

no

I am not a vegetarian but i think it is because of the fact they may be against the whole animal eatting. They may be against killing animals for food.Although they eat subsitutes maybe for protiens in their diet...i am sure they dont taste like meat. Some people perfer chicken, some red meat, some just veggies.

I am a vegetarian and yes I do eat quorn but not the flavoured stuff. I did try them but felt very ill after I tried it. I am a vegetarian for both reasons, because of the animals but also because I don't like the taste of meat.

I am not a true vegetarian - I eat fish. I love the fake meat products because I like the taste, and I enjoy a 'bacon cheeseburger' every once in a while - even though it is made from fake meat.

Personally, I do not eat pork, chicken, veal, lamb, beef, etc. because they make me feel sick to my stomach and I get something like a food hangover the day after eating anything like real meat (yes, I know that fish is a meat, but it doesn't effect my stomach in the same way). Plus, to me, bacon, beef and other fatty meats just look nasty when the fat is cooking out of them - gross!

We see this question here many times.

Veggie sausages do not, as far as i can remember, taste like meat.

Anyway, who cares if they do look or taste like meat, you are missing the point completely.

most vegetarians are such because they do not want to be responsible for the death, torture and cruelty that meateaters sponser. Its got nothing to do with the taste or shape of our food.

jules B. Hate to be the one to tell you but you are not vegetarian if you sometimes eat chicken or fish. Its quite simple really..

Vegetarian is an ancient word for people who are too lazy to chew their food ... probably! ;o)

Well to be honest it's really gross what they put in meat sausages,
from a site
'Fresh sausages are a coarse or finely comminuted meat food product prepared from one or more kinds of meat, or meat and meat byproducts. They may contain water not exceeding 3% of the total ingredients in the product. They are usually seasoned, frequently cured, and may contain binders and extenders. They must be kept refrigerated and thoroughly cooked before eating. '
Animal by products ewww!
Also, the contents of Quorn sausages are much more nutritious than regular sausages, i've tried both but i way prefer the Quorn ones.

The difference between those fake sausages and real ones, Is that the fake ones haven't been tortured :]

"She might as well eat the real thing"? Um, no.

It's very simple. Show me food that is the product of torturing and slaughtering an animal, and I won't eat it. Show me food that isn't, and I couldn't care less how similar it looks and tastes to meat, they could give it a little face for all I care- it's not meat, so it's not a moral problem for me, or for anyone.

The difference is that one is a dead animal and one is not. That's a pretty freakin huge difference.

I can't understand why people can't understand this...

I am a vegetarian and I buy meat substitutes. As someone who was raised on hamburgers and chicken, I do like the taste of meat. But the way that meat gets from the animal to my mouth is entirely too disturbing. Not only that, meat substitutes are WAY healthier for you! Not nearly as much fat, especially saturated fat, or cholesterol, or calories. They are also very easy to prepare for the vegetarian who might not have a lot of time to cook. And when you're eating with non-vegetarians (95% of the time for me), it's nice to fit in.

No!

I have been a vegetarian for 19 years now and I do buy quorn sausages and meat free burgers when having a BBQ . When I became a vegetarian it was because I was appalled at the way animals were slaughtered for their meats . Granted times have changed alot since I become a vegetarian especially in this country . No way would I say quorn products taste the same as meat pretty similar though. I am not against the taste just the cruelty and now it's a way of life for me.

Yes, I am a vegetarian! Your daughter probably buys the meat flavored sausages because she likes the taste of meat but does not want to eat any dead animals. There are lots of vegetarian products that are not meat flavored. Your daughter probably is a new vegetarian and has not yet found meatless protein rich products. She will learn. My guests love my vegetarian dishes

ew meat is like so gross; it has all these dirty vitamins in it , and like ; EW, who would eat something raised in dirt, because pigs roll around in the dirt so your actully eating like , dirt ! EW grossssssss

They are most likely man made flavors, not the real thing.
I wouldn't be a vegetarian for two reasons, it costs more, and they don't have the textures down for a red steak, so it doesn't taste very pleasurable.
You get people saying how cruel it is, have you ever seen a nature video, they are the cruelist scenes, showing a lion taking down a young antelope, perhaps the vegetarians will try to turn them into vegetarians as well.
Also, what happens if we stop eating meat as a people, is there a chance that we will not be able to use it for survival in case we have to eat something else. We have an organ, the appendix, in our body, that may have been an organ for the digestion of grasses.
Twenty years ago, I associated vegetarianizm with some form of brain disorder. Every vegetarian I met then had some form of odd character about them. I had a girl friend for a short time, very short, that was a vegetarian that didn't like vegetables. I knew another individual that was in an industrial accident, smelled too many fumes, another individual thought it was a sin to eat meat. Too many odd balls for me to honor their argument.
To think society is cruel to animals by killing them, what about the bible, there was the sacrafice of animals for the blood offerings in the old testament.
