Speciesist?!

Question:

Speciesist?

I have heard this word used quite a bit in this section. I have nothing against veganism or the animal rights (unless it involves terrorism). I don't understand exactly what this term means.

Give me a definition, and your thoughts?

Answers:
"Speciesism involves assigning different values or rights to beings on the basis of their species membership. The term was coined by Richard D. Ryder in 1970 and is used to denote prejudice similar in kind to sexism and racism.

The concept of speciesism is used mostly by advocates of animal rights, who believe that it is irrational or morally wrong."

I'm glad you asked this question ... I wasn't really sure what the term meant either, but now I understand. Speciesism is definitely something that happens, not just to animals, but the whole planet ... people just tearing it up however we please without regard to consequence.

Drutazo, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that you're getting thumbs down because you have offended vegans/vegetarians in your response, and not only that, you didn't even answer the question correctly. You are in the vegetarian forum, after all.

I'm guessing that it means sort of biased or racist to different animal species.

my definition would be believing that since you are a human, you have the power to do with and treat other species as you please. i think it is just as bad as sexism and racism. i also believe that any other animal should have the ability to live out their lives as they were meant to, with out our interference.

From the American Heritage Dictionary:
Speciesism: Human intolerance or discrimination on the basis of species, especially as manifested by cruelty to or exploitation of animals.

Speciestist is a word mostly used by vegans/veggies to belittle those who do not agree with there ideas. Basically in there eyes it means a person or thing that eats or uses animals.

More thumbs down by veg*ns

Heidi: I did give a very board answer to my question, the term speciestist is apply by many veg*ns to people who do eat meat, or use animals as they do not do those actions to humans, but ideally it is just a human label, animals are by nature speciestist they will also hunt kill, eat or sometimes use each another, but as they are not human they are not label speciestist. I could agrue that the term "speciestist" is a term used by moralists, people who are veg*ns and believe they have more moral values than non-veg*ns. But at the end of the day morals and likewise are just human rules/logic that are not used by animals, so one could say that using human logic about not using animal logic, then so many animals do it to each other, is indeed speciesist in nature.

I think it means kinda like a racist who likes their own race a specieist likes their own species and wants to kill the other ones...

A speciest is one who assigns different value to
to different forms of life,( i.e. a cat is more valuable
than a chicken, centipede grass is more imporatnt
than kuzu.

The opposite of this is ecofeminism. It is the tendency
to equate oppression of other species with the
oppression of members of the human race.
Ecofeminist argue that all species hold the same
value and that they are vital to the integrity of their
particular ecosystem.

Ecofeminism is closely related to the Gaia principal
which states that the earth is an alive organism with
individual body parts(species) that make it a whole
functioning unit.

Specism is thought by many environmentalist to be
an off-shoot of "dominionism".
Dominionism refers to the belief that
God made man to rule over the whole earth
including animals. The vast majority of dominionists
believe that this means that all resources and other
forms of life are subject to mankind's will and can be
used anyway it deems. Discenting dominionist's
believe that God placed man in charge of the earth
to be responsible stewards and caretakers of all
resources and forms of life. Hence the reason you
will find vegan fundamentalist and qual hunting
fundamentalist also.

I hope this helped.

BTW- I donot mean to suggest that all fudamentalist
are dominionists by default. Different christians hold
different views on man's relationship to other organisms.
