Has anyone seen the news about Mars confectionery?!

Question:

Has anyone seen the news about Mars confectionery?

Apparently they are switching their ingredient "whey" from a vegetable based to an animal based product. Animal whey rennet is obtained from calves stomachs. I am not an all out animal rights person but I do not believe this is a step in the right direction in terms of ethical business. I am personally boycotting all Mars and possibly all Masterfoods products until this is decision is reversed. I just want to tell people the facts and let them also make up their own mind on this.

Hi, my point was that there is no real need to change to animal derived whey just for the sake of 5p on a tonne of chocolate etc. If there was no real alternative then fair do's, but to change this now is ridiculous and I hope they either reverse this decision or it costs them in lost revenue.

A lot of people have seen this news this week - it's on all the national newspaper's websites. The Guardian printed a follow-up article yesterday.

An online petition asking Masterfoods to reverse their decision has gained 2000 signatures in just a couple of days and a new website has been launched to inform and co-ordinate responses to the company's announcement.

i saw that, think it's ridiculous. It's like their punishing vegetarians for some odd reason.

It's not like the products were really vegetarian before, considering the refined sugar contained in them. Anyway, no one will care if the Vegetarian Society makes a fuss. Things will change when the large Indian veg population of England takes a stand.

ewwwwwwww i have just scoffed two bags of mars planets aint no way i am eating their stuff now ..

I think using animal rennet is absurd, but those confections were never truly vegetarian to begin with. Sugar is processed through "char" which is ground animal bones (its the same stuff thats used in fish aquariums) The sad fact is, most foods have animal sourced ingredients of some type. Think of "enriched" products such as cereal, wheat, flour, rice, etc-most of the vitamins used to enrich the products are from animal sources, as are most vitamin supplements. Unfortunately, we are surrounded by dead animals.

Yep, we've seen this question before today

I suggest you write to Mars, no point in moaning about them here....

Hi,

I'm curious as to why Mars have chosen to use animal rennet in thier Mars brands and remove 5% of the market ?

Are you sure your share holders really want you to automatically reduce your sales by 5% ?

Seems very strange business behaviour to me.

Any you would be wise to get Paul Goalby to learn about vegetarianism before commenting it like this:

If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate," said Paul Goalby,
corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods.

What nonsense ! There is no such thing as a "strict" or "less-strict" vegetarian. People are either vegetarian or not. Its so simple. Has Mars any clue as to the derision his comments and your decision have created on the internet. You have to laugh really, how can such a large corporation get something so wrong.

Shame Mars have no clue in this regard.

Personally, i look forward to trying out all those vegetarian chocolates now, maybe you have done us all a favour.

thanks for that opportunity !

I heard about this today, I am vegan n so do not eat milk choccie but my family r veggies n do like the milk choccie n so now i find this increasingly frustrating as it takes away another thing for veggies i find it stupid that they feel they have the need2change to animal based products it's absolutely rubbish n so i hope they feel they have to re-change or like sum1 else said lose revenue in all products!

I saw it too and i was more surprised by the fact they'd not publicised it, warning us poor veggies, than the fact they'd done it in the first place.

Come on mars, at least give us some notice so we're not accidentally ingesting animal products!

it's so unfair!!
there are so many veggies around nowadays... and although there's other chocolate, i love galaxy and bounty!!
grrr them.
i'll join you in that boycott x

As a vegan I don't eat Mars bars anyway as they have milk in them but I agree with you-this is a stupid move on their part.

Vegetarian alternatives to animal rennet are readily available and are only slightly more expensive.

This is just greed-they think that by saving a small amount on rennet they will make even more profit than they already do.

Its awful isnt it? My friends were so annoyed! They should make a law to prevent stuff like that happening
