I am trying to become a vegetarian... What do I eat and what do i not eat?!

Question:

I am trying to become a vegetarian... What do I eat and what do i not eat?

I recently joined a group of vegetarians on myspace and I saw horibble pictures and did research and read some terrible things about killing animals for us to eat. And I feel that animals have the same rights as humans and they should be able to live.

Oh, my, God, there are so many wonderful things to eat. Since you are just starting, why not make it easy. Like buy some veggie burgers. Fry them in some Pam or a little olive oil for 4 minutes on each side then put them on whole wheat bread or bun and add all the fixin's. Delicious & low fat. Try some Mushroom spaghetti sauce and WW pasta. Go to Wholefoods Super Market or any health food store and see what they have. Did you know Burger King has a veggie burger? (BK Veggie) Also, you can get a "Veggie Whopper".That's a Whopper with no meat. Go to Subway & get the Veggie Delight. Good with oil and vinegar added.
Lot's of salads. Fresh fruit. Bush's Vegetarian Baked beans. Hormel Veg Chili. In the produce section you will find Smart Dogs Veg Hot Dogs. Steam one for 2 or 3 minutes and put on bun or bread with all the fixin's-Yum. Tabachnik forzen Veg soups. Try Chinese & Thai restaurants. Try Greek-Falafal, stuffed grape leaves, hummus, tabouleh, babaganoush. So many wonderful things. Good Luck.

Oh, gee....
All I can do is wish you good luck

First, animals eat other animals to survive, it's called the survival of the fittest so it's ok to eat animals as long as they are killed humainly. If you insist on being vegiterian, you can be octo/lacto vegiterian eating milk products and eggs along nuts, veggies, fruits and grains ot you can be vegan eating only what comes from the earth. In both cases, you have to do research and see which vitamins you will be lacking not eating meat. B12 is one of them and very important so take supplements. Also, take Omega 3 oil supplements as they are mostly in fish and flax has mostly Omega 6 so it can get very unbalanced.

It's great that you are trying to become a vegetarian. Some vegetarians eat fish and seafood, but some don't. Some just stick to plants and plant products (as in staying away from eggs, but using egg substitute). Vegetarians always have a choice. The diet usually consists of a lot of greens, tofu, pasta, cheese, and mushrooms.

If you want to be a vegetarian you should just make sure you know whats in the food you buy and order as well as making sure that you still get all the nutrients that your body needs other wise you could get sick from mal nutrition

I think one thing many people don't realize when they become vegetarians is that gelatin is an animal product (made from hooves of animals slaughtered for meat). You need to carefully check ingredients before purchasing foods, you'd be surprised at how many include this (not just Jello--I know some sour creams contain it, and painkillers that are "gel tabs" have gelatin). Also, many foods that you may think are vegetarian will have beef or chicken stock in it (one that comes to mind is oriental-flavored ramen noodles). Good luck!

You are smart not wanting to eat meat. Those that say we are ment to eat meat are Dead in Mind cause they eat Death.. meat is dead carcass and the bible warns about par taking of dead carcass. You are What You Eat!
There's lots of food that isn't meat just go to your local grocery store or health food store! Wheat, Beans, Fruit, Cereal, grains, seeds, coconut milk, rice milk, soya milk,
vegetables!

vegetables , fruits , all kinds of grains , beans , etc.. take it slow at first by just cutting out meat and then as you go along start cutting out animal derived ingredients. the two largest ingredients to look out for are ...

gelatin- derived from animals tissues and such . avoid jello ,it also goes into butter , sour cream, yougurt , etc..

rennet/rennin- acid from a baby cows stomach used to coagulate cheese .

this page is really helpful in answering any questions you may have it really helped me when i started out.

like i said just go about it at a comfortable pace and you will get the most from it . it is very honorable that you are considering the welfare of animals , keep up the good work : )

ps. since i became a vegetarian people have called me a freak , weirdo , emo , stupid , abnormal , against nature , and my family suggested i go to therapy . you may be called some of these terms but remember that you are standing up for what you believe in and that YOU are right and they only wish they could be as cool and compassionate as you .

I suggest getting some books on the topic and join some online discussion groups. What it comes down to is you avoid products from the slaughterhouse (Meat, gelatin, animal rennet which is found in many cheeses etc)

I eat things like veggie stir fry, lasagna (made with animal rennet free cheese), veggies/pasta in peanut sauce, veggie burgers, tacos (made with soy crumbles), sloppy Joes, Veggie fried rice and so much more.

you cant eat poultry (included chicken), FISH(many ignore that animal), red meat and gelatin. besides that you can eat just about anything. this is all assuming you want to be a lacto-ovo vegetarian.

Ok, so eating meat is bad. That's pretty much the trick to being a vegetarian.
