Tips on going vegan?!

Question:

Tips on going vegan?

I'm already a vegetarian. No meat and no fishies for me! But I'm really considering going vegan. What are some goods tips and what sort of foods should I eat as a substitute to get all my nutrients. Also, should I start taking vitamins or anything like that?

Answers:
thats awesome, im excited for you :) just make sure you eat a lot of different foods, and don't be afraid to try new things. if you don't limit your self to just carrots, celery and bread you'll get all the nutrience you need. beans have protein (obviously) and kidney beans have b12. dark leafy greens have calcium. eat whole grains, a lot of different types of vegetables (my favorite is fresh beets with salt and a little italian dressing on them. they are so crunchy and good!) whole rice, nuts, seeds, legumes, and fruit. almond breeze by blue diamond is my favorite type of milk substitute. (the chocolate taste just like regular chocolate milk!)

when shopping get good at reading labels closely because animal products are hidden every where. casein, why and gelatin are all non-vegan. a good book is vegan freak and a good cookbook is how it all vegan. it is hard at first but i know you can do it, you seem determined.

if your eating a balanced vegan diet, you shouldn't have to take vitamins. but if you would feel better if you did take them, then search for a vegetarian vitamin since regular vitamins usually have animal products in em.

Soy protein is the best, seek advice from your dr. about vitamins, supplements, etc. You may need to have general bloodwork done to determine iron, potassium and other mineral levels in your blood. Watch your skin color especially around your eyes, you can generally tell if your body is lacking something if your skin becomes discolored.

I was told a lot of fresh food has a lot of the nutrients you might think you were missing, just that you have to get it fresh and organic if need be. Some people find the B1 and B12 usually missing in a Vegan's diet in a little Brewer's yeast. It is a hard row to hoe, and it would be way simpler if you just cut back 99% by allowing yourself a little meat, or a little powdered milk sometimes, then you'd be OK

rice that wat my cuz eats and she is vegan

Absolutely! A vegan diet is perfectly suited to those who wish to ignore all of Mother Nature's common sense, starting most obviously with pointy incisors!

Eschew all meat. All protein is bad. Your body is designed for it (note again the pointy incisors, they're only the first step in your digestive tract), but you're a tree-hugger, with your mercury-filled compact fluorescents, so you know that you're smarter than scientists, engineers, physicians, dieticians and Mother Nature. That Bachelor of Arts in English Literature sure told those scientists, didn't it? Heck, even your cat is on a vegan diet (never mind she's now going blind - what's that taurine stuff the veterinarian keeps telling you she's missing?).

Unless you have a *really* good reason (ie. medical doctor - note MEDICAL, not a "holistic shaman" or other bullspit), eat meat. You were designed for it. Hate to break it to you, but your teeth are omnivorous - you won't get all the nutrients you need from plants, and you won't get all the nutrients you need from animals. You are, like most monkeys, biologically designed to require both. Eat both, or die. Very simple.

Malnutrition is a slow and painful death.

Since it seems that a little scientifically-grounded common sense is more than I expect your protein-deprived brain can handle, I wish you adieu. And sterility, so your intellectually defective and common-sense deprived genes will not be procreated. And a morphine (nice natural source, poppy seeds) prescription, so we don't have to hear you whining as your internal organs digest themselves.

But that's okay, you're smarter than your own biology.

Your incredible brainpower is eclipsed only by your sexy Treblinka physique.

Yay, another vegan!

1) eat plenty of nuts
2) eggplants have all sorts of healthy vitamins such as a wee bit of protein
3)tofu and soy are great things to use when cooking
4) get plenty of fruits and vegtables

Breakfast:
1)bowl of oatmeal with choice of fruit, and a fruit\ protein drink

2) toast with margerine, choice of fruit, fruit based drink

those are some of the many options

Lunch:

1)Salad with light, vegan dressing
2)vegan pad thai with lots of vegtables

once again, there are many many many more options

dinner can be the same as lunch
it is important to remember that vegans need plenty of protein, iron, and other things that meat contains. but you don't need meat to get those things. I think it is a good idea to take vitamins, that way you are getting plenty of vitamins and minerals to survive.

Good Luck!

I had a hard time when I went vegan because I wasn't eating protein. It's best to measure out your soy/beans/whatever the night before so you can plan how much you need to eat the next day. And you'll need to take vitamin B12 suppliments.

eat lots of nuts

pah, vegan
