Is margarine safe for vegans?!

Question:

Is margarine safe for vegans?

Answers:
Hi there... all margarines are vegetable based and therefore come from oils... as oils are liquid they have to be processed to make them solid and spreadable... so have you thought about not using them and trying something else instead?

What about using different veg oils, such as olive, walnut or sesame? These oils can be expensive but you are not going to use heaps, so they will last a while... plus they will give extra flavour, and boost your intake of good essential fats which can be lacking if vegans dont take time to include nuts and seeds in their diet.

Another favourtie (which ok means you have to have a grinder/blender, and takes a minute of your time) is to blend pumpkin seeds to a paste (add a little oil or water to help it blend, and you can add a tiny bit of salt to taste if you wish) This can be used instead of margarine on toast.... it doesnt 'melt in' but I dont notice it when i add something else on top of it ( i wouldnt eat on its own...not so exciting!) This way you get lots of good fats and a healthy dose of zinc too!

for any other cooking I would always use oil instead of margarine... even in cakes/muffins or breadmaking.

As long as it is all-vegetable margerine, then it should be appropriate. Margerine that contains animal fat or milk fat must say so on the ingredients list.

Some have milk products in them, some don't. Look for a margarine marked "Pareve" or "Parve", that does not have any dairy or animal products. (Technically, it does not rule out eggs, but I don't think anyone puts eggs in margarine.)

Margarine is probably better if it is all vegetable.

Safe it is, but many margarine's have animal fats in it, so make sure it is all-vegetable.

Hi Ksmomm, I think margarine has some animal fats in them some more than the others. LOL LOL.

It depends on the margerine ( Canadian spelling) Some margerines contain Lard.. it may say animal by products or tallow
or beef fat oils, some margerines say may or may not contain animal fats. Even canola oil is created with extract of a chemical from a pigs thyroid glad to bind grass wheat with regular wheat to make a more durable wheat. Canola wheat has been discovered to mess up ones thyroid. Canola wheat can cause obesity too!
The only margerine that is safe is vegetable margerine.. In Canada those that don't say pure vegetable oil are allowed to have 15% animal fats without saying so! If they say Pure and it contains animal fat they can be sued! It's very hard to find margerine that says Purely 100% vegetable oil without going to a Healthfood store! There is a margerine made with vegetable oil and coconut milk and it is great but a bit pricey! Who wants to pay $5 a pound for margerine? Not I, well at least I'm not a vegan but I am vegetarian that's nearly vegan

its safe its just much worste than butter. actually margarine is dyed yellow its original colour is grey...i say go for butter cause its better.

Many either have some dairy or gelatin. Earth Balance is very good and vegan though!

It is safe if it is a all vegetable margarine

well some are not.
They sell vegan margarine though.

It is not good for anybody! It is un-natural! It is made when water is forced under high heat and pressure into oil. Just use a good quality oil to cook your foods in. Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE from being PLASTIC...

( this fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated , this means hydrogen is added changing the molecular structure of the food )

YOU can try this yourself, purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area, within a couple of days you will note a couple of things, no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it,( that should tell you something) it does not rot, smell differently...Because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it, even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow...Why? because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Yuck!

Yesss, It is made from vegetable oil.

with the hoopla against transfats, margarine is not safe for anybody

Most Margarine is NOT vegan, as they contain Whey, Animal fats or vitamin D3.

A good brand of Vegan Margarine is Earthbalance (which is also trans-fat free as well)
