Here are everyday tips on cutting onions:

The bigger and firmer the onion, the easier it will be to cut.

Always start with a sharp knife―a dull knife can slip and will mash rather than slice through the onion.

Use a chef’s knife, if you have one, rather than a serrated knife, for cleaner cuts.

Be sure your cutting board is positioned securely on the counter. If necessary, place a damp kitchen towel underneath to keep the board from sliding around.

If cutting onions ahead of time, pack them in a plastic zipper-lock freezer bag, squeezing all the air out, then enclose in a second plastic zipper-lock freezer bag, and refrigerate, to keep everything in your fridge from tasting like onions.

Use pre-cut onions within 2 days.

Save onion trimmings, including the papery brown skin―for golden color, store in a well-sealed plastic zipper-lock freezer bag in your freezer and add to soup stock.

Stop the cryin already!

Using a knife, cut a cone out of the bottom of the onion (where the roots come out). The diameter of this cone should be about a third of the diameter of the onion, and about 1/3 deep. Take this piece and throw it away (don't put it down the disposal!). This piece contains the part/gland that makes you cry.Once you've gotten that piece out, chop off the top, peel, and slice the onion.

You know your cone is too small if it doesn't work.

Keep onions in the refrigerator until you use them, this will help and don't cut the bottom off, peel the onion skin off, rinse off the onion under cool water. I don't have much of a problem with crying over onions, so that works for me. Some of my friends say if you hold a piece of bread in your mouth you wont cry, I guess it's worth a try. Also an easy way to chop onions, make slits across and down the onion go deep but please watch your fingers, how may cuts you make depends on the size you want the chopped pieces to be, once you do that start slicing, and you have chopped onions without chopping.

freez the onion for 5 min. then cut it , & also onion in frig. seems to be easier not as bad, but I have found the freezer thing is the only one that doesnt give that effect.

Even better - just light a candle nearby. It burns the fumes that the onion gives off.

If you have a gas stove you can cut the onion near a lit burner. I promise this works...I do it everytime I cut onions...and the nice part is it doesn't alter the taste of the onion like pouring lemon juice on it or even running water on it.

Very Easy! Cut it in the water. After cutting use the water in your food preparation.

If you eat a carrot while cutting an onion your eyes don't tear.

You can either cut them under running water which washes away the chemicals that cause the pain or keep them in the fridge and cut them while they're still cold.
Cutting them when cold keeps the vapor pressure in the cells down and means that the chemicals released won't spread far enough to react with your eyes.

put on a mask

Try chewing gum. It actually works for me.
