The G in vegan sounds like in "vegetable", or like in "Vegas"?!

Question:

The G in vegan sounds like in "vegetable", or like in "Vegas"?

Answers:
Vegas ..would be correct but there are two pronunciations for the word Vegan ..both correct depending on where you live ... [vej-uhn; especially Brit. vee-guhn .... I am used to the first which the e is short like Vegas (just substitute the s for the n) ..but many say the e long like tee ... ..either way ..you say tomato ..lol

vegan forever EDIT : after futher discussion with someone on this subject unaware of why I would recieve thumbs down ... it has come to my attention that since the Vegan society of the US (and the words founder , Donald Watson) pronounce it as "VEE GAN" as well as the vegan society of the UK .. this is the only form most vegans accept ....and seem to get angry if you do not use this way...... with that I want to add that in New York it is quite COMMON and considered acceptable to use the soft g and e... so you will hear it pronounced that way often.. or is that "off en" or "off ten "... you can decide if having an open mind is part of being vegan , for we as people pronounce many words differently .. all being tolerant and acceptable of one another .. I am rather disgusted right now at the closed mindedness I am seeing .. that is my edit ..
