Are you sick of people calling themselves vegetarians when they eat fish?!

Question:

Are you sick of people calling themselves vegetarians when they eat fish?

Honestly, fish are animals, so it's meat! If you eat fish you're NOT a vegetarian!

Answers:
Hello Brennan, have you ever noticed how I end all my answers? I started doing that a few months ago after I got totally disgusted by all the ignorant fools (and one in particular) that kept insisting that fish and fowl are acceptable due to the abuse of the -arian suffix. We've got to work to end this idiotic meme that there are forms of vegetarian that eat flesh! It's a relatively recent trend (seems to have started in the '90s) so we should be able to kill the meme.

The word piscivore has been used well over 2000 years to describe people that eat fish and we need to get it back into common 'non-scientific', general population usage. Correct morons that abuse the -arian suffix by pointing them to the right word. When you're at a restaurant, ask them what vegetarian options they have have, if they list fish explain the truth to them and make sure to politely tell them "Vegetarians don't eat any animals including fish. People that eat fish are called piscivores" or something similar.

This junk has to end now before idiots start calling themselves beefawhatevers (that may be the point I go postal).

Edit:

To the person that thinks it's too hard to explain their piscivorous diet... Stop being so d*mn lazy! All of the 'ancient' vegetarians like me spent DECADES having to explain what the H*LL vegetarian meant every time we tried to dine out!

If you want to eat fish that's fine!! Just make d*mn sure you tell people that you are NOT a vegetarian but are instead a Piscivore, a name and tradition that goes back to ancient Roman times.

Otherwise you are nothing but a lazy, lying, sack of goo that deserves to have your fish cooked in bacon grease and stuffed with tripe!

Vegetarians do not eat fish. A fish eater is a Piscivore. Spread the correct word!
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/piscivo...

very! it's disgusting! i mean a fish is a living thing after all!

It does kind of bother me. Whenever I go to a restaurant, my family or boyfriend immediately freak out and search the menu for something I can eat. I'm a bad veggie, I'm not a huge fan of salads that have a ton of stuff - I just like lettuce, dressing, and croutons. Then they always ask the waiter what veggie options their are and they always are like "Well, we have this salad.." or "Well, our fish of the day is...". It's worse in Europe - most vegetarians there do eat fish, so its hard ordering. People say fish don't have feelings...I disagree. I, still to this day, believe my goldfish used to do a dance when my mom entered the kitchen and would also dance around when he wanted food. He had personality.

Yes, it's quite annoying because it's the wrong word, and thus, dishonest. But the people who do that are not being dishonest on purpose, they just don't know the words "pescatarian" or "piscavore". If I hear someone say they're a fish-eating vegetarian, I politely tell them the correct terms.

Well, you already know how I feel, but it gets better.
Now people think that dead chicken carcass is vegetarian as well as thinking dead fish carcass is vegetarian.

Next year they will be asking the technical name for a "vegetarian who only eats cow."

What part of "vegetarians do not eat animals" is so confusing to these people?
I think it is great that they are working on making the transition, but I hate the misuse of words.

EDIT- I actually do teach English, and I am a vegetarian, so you can see my conundrum. I share the correct definition of any other word, and my knowledge is appreciated. I share the correct definition of a vegetarian and I hear, "Who are you to say what a vegetarian is?!"
:)

I think it is, I can understand eating cheese and milk and calling yourself a vegetarian but not fish.

Certain types of vegetarians eat fish. Now if a vegan were to eat fish, then they wouldn't be a vegan at all. Vegans don't eat anything that is part of or came from an animal; Vegetarians can eat certain things depending on what type of vegetarian they decide to become. I'm assuming the ones who eat fish became vegetarian for health reasons, otherwise it would be odd that they still eat fish since they too are considered an animal. A minor correction: If you eat fish, you're not a vegan.

YES IT BUGS ME TO DEATH
fish are animals too!!!!! as in they have FEELINGS as well

something that pisses me off even more is when people call themselves vegetarians but taste a meat dish every once in a while

they cant call themselves that...REAL vegetarians dont even eat gelatin and give up tons of their favorite foods for their cause

and to dallas, the guy that said im sick of vegetarians, now get a job YOU SUCK

I know, it is so annoying... here is a "good" one.... Pesca-Pollo- Lacto- Ovo vegetarian... what a mouthful... And really what is the point?...lol

(no offense to lacto- ovo vegetarians(really) I just wanted to make a funny)

It does bother me a bit. I think it bothers me becuase I feel as if it belittles those people who are actual vegetarians. I don't understand how people think that still eating fish makes you a vegetarian.

Yes. I'm sick of all the pescatarian, flexatarian, semi-vegetarian stuff. If you eat poultry or fish, call yourself an omnivore and get over it! I don't understand why people feel the need to label themselves that way. Is it because they wish they were vegetarian, but don't have the willpower? I really don't care what other people eat, it just makes it more difficult for those of us who actually do have a diet different from the norm.

I'm also tired of having to explain that no, I don't eat fish. And getting the response: "Well, some vegetarians eat fish." Apparently in French, the word "vegetarienne" usually includes people who eat fish. Seems to be the same in Portugal as well. And in Greece, where they fast from all animal products during Lent (vegan paradise!), for some reason octupus and squid are considered animals. Sigh. I just smile and say "pass the veggies."

Fish is technically not considered meat. Meat is like beef or chicken. If you are a vegetarian, you need to have sufficient supplements. Fish can supply certain things.

i really don't care. i am a vegetarian, i tell people i am a vegetarian. i don't eat fish, poultry, cattle, swine, lamb or any animal. i don't consume a lot of dairy.
i really am not worried about the title. yea, it kind of bugs me. but really, who cares. be yourself, eat what you want to and call yourself what you want to call yourself. it's not worth it to get annoyed.

but i love it when i say i'm vegetarian and i get this reply
blank stare, " but you eat chicken and fish, right?"

Well I am one of those people who calls himself a vegetarian and eat fish sometimes. I say vegetarian because few people know the word pescetarian. (In fact the computer is telling me it's a typo). I don't want to have to explain what a pescetarian is every time I tell people I'm vegetarian.

I don't eat it that often anyway. I mainly eat it just because some restaurants don't have much vegetarian selection and because it helps my family not go crazy. It's also healthier and more humane(I said more not completely) than other meat.

Edit: It's not simply a matter of me being lazy. I don't see any benefit to teaching everyone what pescetarian means, and most people aren't going to want to hear an explanation of what a pescetarian is any more than I want to give them one. I think often times that they would be annoyed by it and I don't blame them. If I were in their position I would be annoyed by someone who felt the need to educate me about some obscure word when there is a commonly used word that works for everyone who is not picky about small details.

Also the people complaining about this haven't even come to agreement on the correct word. To the person insisting I call myself a piscivore, I am not one. A piscivore (I just looked it up) is an animal who feeds primarily or completely on fish. I eat fish on rare occasions but most of the time stick to a vegetarian diet. The word pescetarian on the other hand means a vegetarian who eats fish.

Actually years back when i was vegetarian, i was shock someone who eat's white MEAT is vegetarian? the word meat should be enough meaning to them. I saw somewhere there are different classification of vegetarian but i forgot what are they. Some vegetarian eat dairy products, while others don't. But real vegetarian eat only vegetables and tofu that looks like meat.

I generally agree that if you're going to throw around terminology, you should do so correctly.

On the other hand:

My dad is one of those people that calls themselves a vegetarian when he does consume fish (even though I have explained the difference).

I don't get aggravated with him, because I know he's in his late 60's and has a hard time remembering and grasping a lot of concepts these days.

I'm actually happy with the fact that he has been taking good care of his body and eats well.

I wouldn't get aggravated with someone for misunderstanding the terms either. There are so many topics and so many levels where people just don't know any better.

Being patient, explaining the difference in a polite way and giving good resources always helps. Getting pissed off about it only causes you stress, confuses the other person and doesn't really get anything solved.

Just my personal take on the issue.

Yes I am. They're not vegetarian- they're people who don't eat beef, pork or poultry. Vegetarian means no meat/flesh of any kind.

I hope your all having a great time bitching about semantics. I know it brings me some pleasure to advise people how to improve their vocabulary, but mostly because I want to improve my vocab and I know that teaching vocab is one of the best ways to achieve that goal. What you want for yourself, give to another. All states of mind reproduce themselves. Therefore, I like it when someone says they are a fish eating vegetarian, because it gives me a chance to get a little closer to where I want to go.

Becoming sick of people's attitude or ignorance is a psychological symptom of your ego exerting itself in a variety of ways, including arrogance, superiority, and anger. Your ego is a part of you, so if you try to disown it or ignore it you are ignoring part of who you are or condemning part of yourself. This will only serve to create more ego, because what you resist persists. This is great if you want to be more egotistical.

If, however, you don't enjoy becoming frustrated and irritated by engagements like this, and if this is your experience, then you can choose to stop at any time. Noone is forcing you to be the english teacher of veg*nism & whatever. It's up to you, and only you. You can still be veg&n or whatever without bearing your influence over society in the personal exchanges many of you have described, such as restaurants. If you approached by the waiter, and you don't want the hassle of explaining, simply ask for precisely what you want: (example only) "Can I get a salad including ONLY lettuce, tomato, cucumber, tofu, crutons, balsamic vinegar and a light sprinkling of herbs and salt please?" No fuss method of ordering that guarantees the meal will be exactly what you want, however you want it. If they say they don't customize meals, simply request to speak directly to the chef, and if that doesn't work request to speak to the owner of the establishment. If you make it that high up the chain of command I suggest you take advantage of the opportunity and talk to them about what vegetarian, vegan, peskatarian, etc mean, and that you desire a dish that is garanteed to fit your dietary requirements. I suggest this because speaking to the owner may have an impact on future prints of the set menu, to accomodate people of such requirements, but I see no point in wasting time and becoming frustrated with waiters and waitresses who hold no power or influence over the management of the venue.

As for communicating with people one-on-one, you must decide if the confrontation is worth your time and effort, factoring in variables like how important the person is to you, and if telling them will have any effect, and if that effect will be beneficial or damaging to you or them or others. Talking with people in a place like this is less predictable, because anyone anywhere in the world can read your question or answer, so the only options you really have are the truth, and no comment, unless of course you desire chaos and destruction and confusion by spreading lies and misinformation. Again, that part is up to you.

Good luck.

Not everyone chooses to be vegetarian for animal rights reasons a lot of people do it for health reasons and so still consider fish part of a healthy diet. However it does bug me that they still call themselves vegetarian when they aren't. My partner used to call himself an aquavarian. I do it for both reasons so I won't eat fish. I have been a carnivore, a vegetarian and a vegan and I will tell you the healthiest I ever felt was when I went RAW vegan!! No processed or cooked foods at all. Just raw veggies, fruits, nut, seeds and sprouted grains. Give it a go... Just remember Vegetarians don't eat any animals, vegans don't eat anything that comes from an animal. Fish are animals...

no way
realy they are sick who say vegetarians to eat fish hhhhhhhhhh\
fool people because its 100 percent the people who eat fish are non vegetarian

i am a vegetarian and i eat meat....

How about beef flavored Ramen noodle soup?

This Tuesday being Good Friday , there will be a ladies meeting for Gentlemen only .... there will be no admission , you pay at the door ... there will be seats all around , you sit on the floor .... And now I am going to tell Tell you something , I know nothing about ............ In the middle of the night , when the sun was shining bright , two dead boys came to life ......... back to back , they faced each other ......... drew their swords and shot each other ........ a Deaf policemen heard the noise .......and came and shot the two dead boys ...........If you don't believe my tale is true ..........ask the blind man .... HE saw it too ! Must have been written by a fish eating vegetarian

EXACTLY!!! I'm sick of it, too! Believe it or not, when I became a vegetarian in high school, I would sometimes bring peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, and then my classmates would claim that I wasn't really a vegetarian, because nuts and legumes are considered members of of the meat food group! Some people are so damned ignorant!

Yep. Go forth and spread the truth my son.

:D

yes, actually even milk is not veg

Very.

It's just as easy to say 'pescetarian' or 'piscavore' (thanks, greenghost) as it is 'vegetarian', and if people are unfamiliar with the the terms, it's easy enough to educate them.

The excuse that most people don't know the term(s) is silly. Most people don't want to sound foolish and will adopt the terms if they're gently enlightened, and even share them with others. A polite "I believe the term you're looking for is 'pescetarian'/'piscavore'" should suffice.

It would also help a waitperson or host(ess) offer the appropriate choices to a real vegetarian.

sure y not . . .thanx for the points

Right on!
It also winds me up when people talk about a meal they've had which contained meat but they say *it was OK because I took the meat out*. Anyone should know that meat juices/blood will run into the meal so no matter how much meat has been removed it still won't be suitable for vegetarians.
