Hidden animal products?!

Question:

Hidden animal products?

As I recently switched to being a vegan I can't help but worry that there are hidden animal products in some foods and I'll eat then not recognising that they have animal products in them. What should I look out for.

Answers:
Look for this book at Abe, Amazon, the library or where ever else you look for books.

"Animal Ingredients A TO Z" by the E. G. Smith Collective

It covers about 99% of everything animal, it only misses the few new ingredients that have come out since printing.

Watch out for Casein, also. It's in almost all cheese replacements. It's a milk protein that gives the imitation cheese a certain texture and the ability to melt. Also, don't make this mistake; Lactose Free Ice Cream is not milk free, just free of lactose. It's quite a common mistake among new vegans.

Look for gelatin in product ingredient labels, as well as Rennet and Cochineal.

Watchout for lard, tallow, beef fat) it's often in margerine, crackers, cereals, even enriched milks, gelatin products
just read the ingredients lison the products that you buy before you buy them! Once I got a pkg of perogies at Walmart it was printed on box.. Onion and potatos but it
was obvious when I got home and after I put them in pot and cooked them.. I could see they were bacon perogies.. Instead of me eating them I gave them to a Seniors Centre!
I settled for beans!
