Morals or life?!
Morals or life?
i am writing this question from a laptop in a hosptal bed.
i currently found out i have multiple sclerosis.
this is a degenerative disease of the brain, speech, and muscles. i have been vegan close to a year now. the staff is telling me no red meat is fine but should consume fish. I was once consumed by fashion but once i made the vegan decision i gave upallmy leather bags and even my beloved vintage. i have already modified my whole life.
i am afraid of dying.i am a 22 year old and am confused why i have this. i want to know if me being vegan caused the touble in the firsr lace. should i eat fish now? the hospitalis telling me its could for the problems with my brain. i would feellike a hypocrite since i dont waer leather but eat fish. what should i do? i want to live but i dont want to be a hypocrite.
Answers:
As other knowledgeable folks have said, there's nothing in fish that you can't get from flax or other vegan foods. You might also tell these people to head over to maternity and check the ingredients in 'pre-me' formula. They'll learn that it contains extra virgin coconut and flax oils to help the infants nervous system develop! Coconut and/or flax aren't going to cure your M.S. but there have been peer reviewed studies done on both that indicate that inclusion of short and medium chain saturated fats can help slow the progression of the disease.
It's now the 21st century, tell them to stop using 18th century advice!

Vegetarians do not eat fish. A fish eater is a Piscivore. Spread the correct word!

don't eat fish
no being vegan didnt caused this hun, just take a fish oil capsul...if anything a vegan diet is VERY RECOMMENDED!
I am soo sorry to hear about your situation....now if you choose to eat fish...thats ur choice...but i think if the doctors are recommending it for your health.....i think you should just eat it....you would not seem like a hypocrite at all....

I hope you feel better and hope my advice helps...good luck to you..and god bless u
You are not going to die if you don't eat fish. Get an opinion from another neurologist, preferably one who understands your vegan lifestyle. He or she can give you more relevant advice regarding diet and treatment.
Best wishes!
I have a friend with a mom that has m.s. and I do know that studies show that omega-3's that you get from fish can help lower inflammations.
I think that while you have your laptop, get into google and start doing some research ... I would also ask your doctor about taking an omega-3 supplement, as opposed to eating fish, and see what s/he says!
I will give you some links to some things that are interesting...

Hopefully these will shed some light on dietary suggestions. Please realize that a lot of people live with m.s. and you might consider asking your doctor about a support group, or consider joining an on-line one.
Good luck to you, and God bless!
Live according to your highest ideals, "to thine own self be true." You may also want to check out Christian Science treatment. I actually know someone very well who was healed of MS in Christian Science- and she was not a Christian Scientist (nor is she now.) This was about 18 years ago and she continues to be very healthy.
I wish you well.
Well, I myself is vegan since I born! And I am alive if you can read this!!! I never had any kind of meat, fish, chicken in my life. Egg I had some exclusion like I don't eat eggs but I eat ice cream, cakes made of eggs. For me now it's hard to even taste any meat and trust me I feel more healthy then most.
I don't know what to advise you but try to stay on fresh green vegetables and fruits and be happy, trust me no one dies of not eating fish and/or meat.
Good luck and I wish your speedy recovery.
Tough question. I will say, for the record, that my dad eats fish but considers himself a vegetarian.
I will also say that I am not a vegetarian for the reasons of nature. I look out in the world and see lions eating zebras, chimps chomping on insects, foxes hunting rabbits. I dream I am one of them and know that, in truth, I am. Humans are omnivores, made to eat plants and animals. It is not made as a choice, but as a combination diet. While you may get protein from soy, that does not mean that you truly get all your body needs.
And who said it is more morally right to eat plants than animals? Plants feel, too. A scientific experiment involved having two plants in a room. A man came in and ripped up one plant in front of the other one. Scientists hooked electrodes to the surviving plant and monitored it. The readings spiked every time the "plant murderer" came into the room. The plant was afraid of the man who killed the other plant! Of course, other scientists refute the man's findings because of what would happen if they became too widely accepted-- people would start feeling guilty about eating plants! In truth, I feel no guilt in anything I eat. We are part of a diverse ecosystem and have to be a part of it or die. It is simply our nature.
My advice is to eat fish if you can bring yourself to do so. If you cannot, your health may deteriorate. If you decide to do so and want to know where to go first, I suggest trying the salmon at Olive Garden-- expensive, but the taste is to LIVE for!
I hope for you to have health and happiness in whatever you choose.
Also of note: Montel Williams, the talk show host, also has M. S. You might want to look up information about his situation and how he deals with it. I think he also has a book out.
Fish is not going to cure MS first of all. If you want to get extra omega-3's (most likely the reason they are recommending fish) eat flak seed or use flak seed oil.
Since this is a serious issue, I will leave my comments aside and instead provide you with relevant links:

One has nothing to do with the other. It has been an old wives tales that fish is brain food. They do have fish oil tablets which are good for HDL levels (known as the Good cholesteol). A fish oil tablet can be used...that way you don't have to eat fish.
if they are trying to push fish on you for omega three and omega six, start introducing more flaxseed oil into your diet.
has more omega 3 and more omega 6 then fish does, and none of the cholesterol, or heavy metals. mmmm. mercury! gotta love that taste!
You have hit such a Delicate Situation for any one to answer this.. I do believe that what we put in our body is the cause for a lotta things.. But Me ,, I also believe that each of us has a weak part or a stronger part that holds our bodies together . Meaning a man can have Liver problems and die at sucha young age,, whereas another can live to be 100 and drank every day of his adult life..I think each of us is stronger in one part of our bodie than the person next to us..I used to work as a psych tech and dealt with chemical dependency as well as other psych probs. depression, eating disorders and suicidals. but on thing I did observe is that many people could not handle being a drug addict whereas the other person smaller weaker looking or whatever has done hard drugs and still has thier brain intact and lead a yes bad thing but a functional lifestyle for as long as they live.. As in derpression people , some cannot handle thier life being reminded of the pain iof there childhood as in abuse physically or sexually. some people will try there hardest tro die,, thank god I did put it behind me cuz I was one screwed up person growing up.. But I got into the right feild and I started learning to heal myself. And yes I remember lots but I laugh and enjoy my life now.. I think in your situation I believe strongly in morals,, what made u become a vegan??? If eating the fish or the stuff u wouldn't have before,,if it does make you stronger you had proof like I think a jevoha witness,, no transfusions or whatever certain religions have many have gone against there morals to make there family live..I think it depends on why you are a vegan NOW! I love my fam. and I would do whatever to keep them alive.. including a person you can talk to you and give you the support you need... you are young and there is a long road ahead of you I hope you make the descions in your heart and keep the ones who love you keep u in this world if that is the way it is and eat what docs say... I trusted myself to my dr. and shouldv'e died or I should not even be alive right now I am a living Miracle...I pray you will be on too. God bless you and I hope to hear from you again..darlene
Im sorry to hear about your MS. Why not get a help from a vegan doctor who specilises in this kind of thing? They probably know how a vegan diet can be adjusted to someone with MS, so you wont have to sacrifice your morals for the sake of your life. Do some googling, there is lots of info out there. In the end it is your choice.
Essential fatty acids in fish, can easily be found in plants. Flaxseed being the best.
I have a close friend with MS, known him for 6 years, he is such a positive person and happy. Being diagnosed is definitely not the end of life. Good luck!
EDIT:
Read "Evelyns story". She is a vegan with MS: http://veganmusclepower.org/benefitsofve...
There are some good books mentioned on that page.
There's a book: "Prescription for Nutritional
Healing...A Practical A-Z Reference to Drug-Free remedies
Using Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & Food Supplements"
I understand, my dear. I too have a chronic illness, and had to eat fish on occasion as well. Ask to speak to the head of the nutrition department, and have her explain the reasoning behind it. My doctor told me I needed the protein. Once I did my homework and learned about better sources for getting protein in my diet, I no longer eat fish. Unless the dietician can explain why animal protein is healthier than a complete protein, such as quinoa, legumes, nuts, or beans, I see no need for you to compromise your vegan ways. I dont hold great stock in doctors opinions, because they are all alike-that we need meat, when clearly we do not. I suffered for years before finally figuring out that my health problems were all directly related to food allergies-wheat, soy, eggs, commercial dairy, peanuts, etc.. Consider taking a dietary approach to your condition-it should help, and certainly wont hurt. I went from being crippled to being totally fine just by eliminating my allergens. Dont think you brought this on yourself with a vegan diet-that is most certainly not the case. I would suspect allergies much quicker than I would suspect eating a vegan diet. I hope you feel better soon and get some answers. Follow your heart on the fish issue. Email me if I can help
No hun. You don't have to eat fish.
And don't be afraid of death. It comes to everyone eventually. The animals we save by not eating them, the germs in the air,the people you see walking by you on the street... it's natural and it happens. The only thing you can do is lead a good life and do what good you can in the time you're granted.
I'm 20,myself. I've been a strict near-vegan for almost 5 years now. MS is caused by issues with the brain... it's nothing to do with what you eat. There are things that can help you fight it and regenerate things (omega 3 vitamins being one of them, but since you've got your laptop,I suggest you spend your time waiting for test results and the such reading up on omega 3 stuffs. =) It'll give you something to do and it'll give you alternatives to eating dead fish, too) but not eating dead animals isn't going to hurt you.
I wish you all the best, hun. If you ever need someone to talk to,pop me an IM. I'm almost always around and I always answer my emails and the messages I get when I'm away from the computer.
I think Montel Williams has multiple sclorosis. He busts his butt with fitness coaches and is very careful with diet. He's got a book coming out. Look into macrobiotics. Fish are healthy because of what they eat. The macrobiotic diet uses seaweed, smells like fish, fish eat it. Perhaps you can bypass the fish and get your nutrients from the seaweed. Fish may be good for you but probably not in quantity due to the heavy metals in the flesh. Here is a site regarding eating vegan wholefood diet with no refined foods www.ravediet.com. Buy the book/DVD set. Look into Montel Willams and macrobiotic. Maybe chinese medicine can help you, although most of their cures have animal parts-maybe there are herbs to try and acupuncture. Best of luck. Hospitals don't know squat about food. They feed meat to people just out of bypass surgery...
