Is a vegan diet healthy??!

Question:

Is a vegan diet healthy??

Answers:
I would say that a vegan diet can be the healthiest diet. If you do it properly, making sure to eat a variety of whole foods, with adequate B12 and minimal fats, you can reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and many more diseases that are epidemic in the US.

yes...just make sure you get protein and calcium from somewhere....and take a vita supplement..my roommate lost alot of weight by going vegan

maybe it is, but why would you stop eating meat?

Make sure your eatin enough of the irons vitamins and minerals your body craves.

Yes, as long as you get your fatty acids and protein from other sources.

not completely, for some people yes but you do need some protein and stuff in your diet to be really healthy which comes from meat so try little bits of meat just enough to keep you healthy

Assuming that ABSOLUTELY everything that needs to be supplemented is. Now the question is, if it has to be supplemented, doesn't that mean that your body NATURALLY needs this stuff?

I have no "beef" with vegans. I've found most to be pretty cool. The vast majority of the ones that I met, if not all of them, are not healthy at all. They are skinny, weak and have a green look to them. It's very very hard to stick with a HEALTHY vegan diet. Ezpecially since most vegans are 15-20 year olds trying to figure out their identity. Most are not mature enough to have the discipline to eat right and get the supplements all the time. The stuff is expensive to and most of them don't have money. Think about it, if you go to thanksgiving dinner as a vegan, your selections are reduced to water!

Except for iron deficiency, sure. It's a great heart healthy diet.

For humans a vegan diet can be complete. Some animals - such as cats - wouldn't fare well with a vegan diet. The key as a vegan or a vegetarian is that you need to be committed to eating good foods and to understand which foods make up a complete protein.

yeah if u eat the right stuff of course my Aunty is a vegan & shes healthy ii mean it's just a different diet 2 some ppl

You wont necessarily lose weight by being vegan. There are a lot of vegan friendly foods that are rich in fat. believe it or not, but there are fat vegan people in the world. You just need get your vitamins and anything else you need. calcium you can get from orange juice too and protein from peanuts and beans or lentil. :)

i agree with samuel.
I think it could be healthy enough if you took the time to make sure you are supplementing your diet correctlly, but i have also known many vegans who don't have the time or resources to do that.
There are certain enzymes and nutrients that can only be found in certain animal products, that are suppose to be beneficial to our health. You can take a supplement form of the nutrient in a synthetic form not from animals, but it is debatable weather it gives the same healthful benefit(anyway if its synthetic then it kind of defeats the purpose of being vegan) I'm talking about like amino acids, essential fatty acids, and certain enzymes from animal products.
Things like calcium and protien are easy to get from other sources. Minerals like iron can be tricky though. There are plenty of veggies with iron in them and it seems it would be easy to get enough of it. The problem is, the iron from animal products is almost completely different from plant iron in the way your body absorbs it. The absorbtion rate is way higher from the meat, and also certain other factors affect how much you absorb. for example, eating vegetables with meat at the same time will increase the amount of iron that is absorbed from the meat.
Wow..this could get pretty complicated, i'll stop here. But i don't want to give off the wrong idea, i think in general people eat way too many animal products. i bet its probably more unhealthy to eat too many animal products than too little.
i hope that made sense

Well sorrt of..... you need meat though if you dont eat enough meat them you wont get as much iron and fibre and stuff that you are ment to have.

No. You need some dead animals to balance your diet.

Yes, in my opinion.
But this is what alot of people don't get... A vegan diet a meat-eating diet, blah blah blah. The key word is DIET.
In ANY diet you'll have to make sure that you are getting all the right nutrients to be healthy, whether it includes meat or not.

As long as you take the care to make sure that you are getting all the things that you need, then you should be just fine... (you will prolly lose a few pounds, because vegan means no cake and cookies>uh no unless they are vegan, but whatever< :)So you might lose some wieght but you wont turn into bones and skin... you won't be sickly(In fact, since I've been a vegan, I have had A LOT less colds)... And you definatly won't turn green... That's just dumb.
