What is the component in asparagus that make your urine smell differently? Is it true only certain people experience this phenomenon after eating asparagus? If so why?

It's not my fav food, but I did try it 2-3 times maybe. I dont recall any funny smell though, but maybe because I wasnt paying any attention.
According to Wikipedia its rhizomes and roots are used to "treat urinary tract infections".
