How can I be vegan and get a lot of protein?!

Question:

How can I be vegan and get a lot of protein?

I know you can some a small amount from some plants and beans but I need like more than 60 grams of protein
and i know theres soy but I hear soy is bad for men. and casein and whey come from milk right so its not vegan friendly right? So where else can I get a lot of protein?

Answers:
soybeans and its products - tofu, meat analogs.

and most other beans and nuts..
As a matter of fact one can get too much protein causing kidney problems.

peanutbutter

nuts

peanut butter and protein bars!

nuts and nut products have protein.
i think soy does as well.

My sister has been a vegetarian for many many years - she gets her protein mostly from tofu, soy beans, cheese, milk, and eggs. However, if you're going vegan, I understand that to mean NOTHING animal related, so that takes out dairy, honey, etc.

Good luck.

I was vegetarian for 2 years.. This site may help.

AHHH just continue to stress that nut of a brain.
This is SO sad for me to even think I might help you.

broccili or coliflower.

how is soy bad for men? that cant be true.

gluten, however I don't know if that is from soy. They cook it a lot at vegan restaurants.

wheat gluten, tofu and hummus..

I suggest you google vegan bodybuilders, they know how to get a lot of protein from plants. Best source is soy products and other beans. (there are MANY kinds of beans) Soy's not bad for anyone except for people allergic to it, that's just dairy industry propaganda. Their milk sales must be dropping. But if you dont like soy, stick to other beans and check out the links I pasted.

Good quality protein sources:

* Hemp seed nut and flour
* tofu
* beans (kidney, black, garbanzo, soy, adzuki)
* legumes
* soy protein powder
* unsweetened soy drink

Yes, casein is a milk protein and thus not vegan.

Soy is not bad for men at all. That is purely an urban myth.The worse it can do is limit absorption of some nutrients (zinc I believe), but a lot of foods do that. The reason everyone freaks out is because soy isoflavones are also called phyto-estrogens, so some 14-year old saw that and thought he would grow boobs or something.

There are plenty of vegan athletes and even bodybuilders. Check out the links I sourced below. Nab a vegan nutrition book from your local library.

The only kernel of truth in soy being bad for men is that soy contains phytoestrogens, which can have a bad effect if eaten in huge amounts (like any food). The health risk of excess (phyto)estrogens is that of increased cancer rates, osteoporosis, and breast growth for both genders. Suddenly increasing breast tissue during adulthood can be a health warning sign for both genders as well, it is just more noticeable on men for obvious reasons. But phytoestrogens are found in many foods, such as flax, sesame seeds, wheat, berries, oats, barley, dried beans, lentils, rice, alfalfa, mung beans, apples, and carrots.* And even though soy has the most concentration, you would have to eat considerable soy every meal, or eat lots of processed soy foods for it to have an effect.

Also consider that many Asian men have been eating tofu and edamame (boiled soybeans) for centuries without issue. ;)

Marina G, gluten is found in some grains, usually wheat, but sometimes the source is wheat or barley.

Unless you are a competitive body builder or something, you do not need 60 grams of protein per day (even bodybuilders now find that too much protein is counter-productive now, btw). The RDA is set much too high because of lobbying from the meat and dairy industries. I recommend you read "Diet for a new America". I think it should be required reading for all people, but especially for anyone thinking about a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle who cares where their food comes from.

Also, remember that your body can make most of the protein it needs from the amino acids in a balanced plant-based diet. Don't confuse protein with whole protein, which is traditionally from animal sources. But there are plant combinations that yield complete protein. And remember you can get all the complete protein you need for a day from the yolk of one egg. I know that's not vegan, I'm just trying to give you some perspective on how much you actually need.

My Grandparents are vegetarian and they get their protein from soy, tofu, bean products and peanut butter.

By eating some tasty chicken!

Beans, beans the musical fruit....
