Meat Smugglers - BEWARE!?!
Meat Smugglers - BEWARE!?
I'm vegan for a few months now, and am wondering: what would happen (physical symptoms) if I now suddenly ate meat? I mean, of course I wouldn't do it of my own accord; but this summer I am going to visit my Grandma, who is completely convinced that I am a half-starved, misled, malnourished child who will likely die without (her) intervention - and I am pretty sure that she will try "smuggling" some meat into my diet... like blending it in the blender and incorporating it into the mush at the bottom of pea soup, for example. So I'd like to warn her of the possible side-effects of such action, as I am pretty sure that after not eating meat for so long, I may have lost the ability of digesting it properly. If anyone out there has already been fooled in such a way - or heard of someone to whom that has occurred - what happened? And, on the side - what if she tries to smuggle milk into my diet as well? What then?

Note pertaining to one of the answerees: The words chosen to ask this question simply reflect the fact that I believe that I have the right to know what goes into my food, and that if someone who knows about my diet choice intentionally tries to fool me - that's wrong. I'm an adult now; I can make my own choices about what is right for me and what isn't. And if someone thinks that they are "saving" me by lying... grow up!

if you're vegan for only a few months, possibly not much will happen but it really depends on how sensitive your GI system is. You may get some small effects or delayed effects. Some small effects may be nausea. Bigger effects may be vomiting (you may throw up) or diarrhea. A delayed effect would be diarrhea maybe an hour after eating instead of immediately running to the bathroom. Other small effects may be some headaches.
No side effects..
The meat would probably do you some good...
Your body is built to consume - yea even to require - protein. The fact that you have not eaten meat will not change that. It is likely that you may find some bowel distress due to the reintroduction but if it is "smuggled" by being broken down into soup you should have minor if any effects.
The words you chose to ask your question indicate that you are treating this Vegan thing as a political/spiritual statement of who you are. Food is not the enemy - eating food is not wrong. Most of the foods you are avoiding have tremendous dietary value. You should really get the whole story and work closely with your health professional.
That would be just horrible if your grandma did that.
I would say you'd have an upset stomach, nothing too bad, plus you only being a vegan for a few months, you shouldn't even feel ill.
To avoid your grandma from even thinking this. Maybe you can offer to make dinner one night and make a vegan meal.
well....you might have a stomach ache...you might feel like throwing up. From experience...you may feel dizzy...try to explain to your grandma that you are a vegan now....and I wish you well.
well, to be honest i don't really so any point in being a vegan (no offence to anyone!!) and i , myself am a vegetarian, but if you are not eating meat then you need other proteins which you get from, milk, eggs etc.. but if you aren't eating those either you aren't really doind your body any good whatso ever, but even if your grandma did "sneak" milk into your meal i don't think there would be any side affects atall, there might be side affects if you have never eaten meat but if you are relativly new to being a vegan i think you'll be fine , even if you do consume some meat/milk........
My mother in law has done this twice to my vegetarian daughter age 12, and both times she got very sick. I think your body loses the ability to break down meat protein, and it causes upset stomach and cramping. The milk wouldnt be as hard to digest, I wouldnt think. I would deal with all of this before you go-tell her you value her opinion, and trust her, and that trust would be deminished if she were to try to hide meat in your food. Perhaps that will be enough to make her think twice about it. Tell her you will gladly discuss your choices and welcome her input, but that she has to do the same for you. Have a nice trip, hope it goes well
that was done to me twice by family members, but I made such a fuss the last time no one ever tried again. You have to really show your granny that meat isnt food for you. Talk to her, be serious, dont worry that she might not understand your reasons, what she needs to see is you being upset.
After all, your family doesnt want to hurt you. Unfortunately sometimes they dont know better, you will have to explain how much this issue means to you.
I am a vegan, I cant stand milk, actually I always had trouble digesting it. But I dont know about others. I think, after while your body gets used to a vegan diet and only accepts that.
If you were a vegan for a long time, like a couple years, yes you would most likely get sick, because your body would not be used to it... but since you've only been a vegan for a couple months, I don't think It would affect you all that much(unfortunately) You could probably taste it though, so just be on the lookout, watch everything she does when she is making your food.
And if I were you I would lie, just say that it will make you extremely sick if you eat meat... maybe she will leave you alone.
I know how you feel though, my mom tries to sneak cheese and milk in my stuff sometimes ... dairy products are a little less detectable in food than actual meat, I think. So I usually just watch what she is doing when I eat there. Pain in the butt, but necessary when moms and grandmoms can't accept your decisions:)
Good luck.
I would suggest "grandma" would be in for a dose of BAD KARMA...I mean it's attached not only to your wanting to NOT consume animal products and also attached to the animal who is being abused/murdered...
And so as to say...
HOPE IN VEGAN AWARENESS/understanding TO MAKE it thru to all "grandmothers" and "fatherS"
I don't know how long it takes for your body to slow down production of the enzymes required to break down certain meats and milks, but it can happen, and you may get sick with sudden reintroduction until your body starts producing them again. Some people never get ill, some throw up violently, but most are in between.
Hopefully your grandmother will cease out of respect for you anyway, but if she doesn't, maybe telling her how healthy you are eating vegan would be better than telling her how sick eating meat would make you feel. Because it is likely she's doing this out of concern and love, and the first phrasing is relieving while the second is worrying.
Here's a cut'n'paste from a previous answer of mine that largely applies to your situation. The question was about why eating an animal product got them sick. You may be able to reword this to get the point across to grandma!
------------------------------...
Medieval kings used to daily eat small non-lethal doses of poison so that their body would have immunity to poison. Junkies bodies acclimate to the poisons they put into their bodies and have to increase the amount of garbage they use to get high as their body acclimates to the trash they use.
By stopping the ingestion of animals you've just learned a hard, first hand lesson about how toxic animal 'food' is to the human body! If you decided to start eating animals again it will make you just as sick as if you started putting any toxin into your body. Why would you want to go back to the shorter, sicker life of a meat junkie anyway? You'll live longer, healthier and age slower on the diet our bodies were designed to use!
Ever hear of anyone getting sick off eating a plant food they hadn't had for three months?
It amuses me so much when ignorant people say we need meat for protein. It's they who are in need of educating to find out the many other sources of protein.
And if meat is so good for us, why doesn't the government and health professionals recommend *5 portions* of meat a day?
I don't know what eating meat would do to you, but anyone who feeds meat to you without your consent is over-stepping the mark seriously. You do have a right to know what's in your food and even if it's a well-meaning relative feeding you they should still respect your wishes. If I were you I'd either cook for myself or take ready made meals with me!
Have fun.
