Becoming a Vegan?!

Question:

Becoming a Vegan?

Ive always dreamt of a diet free of animal produce, its not the ethical side (well slightly) but most of is because everytime I eat meat I feel all weird but eating a non meat diet makes me feel clean. I do martial arts and am trying to get a lean muscular body an example would be like bruce lee but obviously no were as perfect as his. Anywho Im worried would a Vegan diet ruin my efforts? Should I just stick to vegeterianism. Im not doing this for a fad. I respect people who meat, as long as they respect how the meat is obtained. Im not against meat eaters infact eat meat if you wish! it has nothing to do with me!

When I went vegan 13 years ago, I lost weight at first (which was a good thing for me back then). Then, over the years my body (as well as my husband's) has gone to a healthy weight. It's what happens when you eat the best food on the planet -- no worries about weight loss or weight gain. It's not even a thought.

The main thing is to be sure you're not just eating your old standard diet "minus the animal products". It's not about taking away from as much as ADDING TO your diet. Think grains, beans, veggies (especially green leafies), beans, fruit, beans, nuts, beans, seeds, beans, tempeh, etc. Did I mention beans? They're packed with protein, which is what you need to build muscle. We have different types of grains and beans all the time -- and when you mix them together you have never-ending combinations.

There is so much food out there to discover. It's always an adventure. Have fun with it!

Best wishes!

I've been a vegan for a very long time and if anything it will help in your efforts to become a martial artist because it keeps you healthy. I would just recommend making sure you get everything you're supposed to in your body. There are a lot of great grocery stores that support vegan diets.

It won't ruin it. You need to find foods that replace the vitamins and other nutrients that you were getting from milk, eggs, fish, cheese, whatever you are still eating as a vegetarian. (Dark) Green veggies, nuts, and beans have a lot of the stuff that the animal products have that you were eating. Find some nutrition books. I always recommend Dummies books because they're in regular people terms instead of in doctor and nutritionist terms. Try "Being Vegetarian for Dummies" and "Nutrition for Dummies." I read the vegetarian one and it was really informative of all kinds of vegetarian diets and vegan diets. Good luck!

I understand vegetarianism, but personally, I believe veganism to be ridiculous - a proxy expression of some kind of guilt.

Veganism would make it very difficult to find adequate protein. I recommend you stick with eggs and cheese.

my son went vegan 2 years ago-he has not had any allergies or asthma since. he still consumes dairy-ie, eggs, milk, cheese. he adds flaxseed to his meals and takes a fishoil capsule and a multivitamin. he eats alot of black beans and i purchase meals for him via frozen food. some of the stuff is actually really good! i do not think that going vegan will interfere with what your trying to accomplish-but you will lose weight on a vegan diet. for muscles, purchase protein from soy, but do not consume soy everyday because soy contains a hormone close to that of females and it can cause breast changes as well as thyroid issues.

as long as you eat lots of protien you will be okay-black beans, peanut butter, nuts ect. add that flaxseed too!

good luck and best wishes-i wish i could go meatless-but i do like a good hamburger or chicken every now and then.

if eating a vegetarian diet makes you feel clean or healthier, go with your instincts and go for it. why not? it's not hurting anybody and it's not anybody else's business either.

Sassy had a very good answer and I thought I would supplement. Check out these links.

Why dont you try veganism for a month and see how it makes you feel? You can always quit whenever you want.

I have been a vegetarian over 11 years before deciding to go vegan and I never looked back. My stomach is finally at peace. I did it for ethical reasons, but seeing all the health benefits made it obvious to me that this is the right choice.

So why not just try it out?

Good luck!
