I am a veggetarian, will I get anemia and die?!


Question:

I am a veggetarian, will I get anemia and die?

I am sure if I need t take iron supplements or something..or if my red blood cells will be too low...I don't know...I've been a vegetarian for 6 months and I don't drink milk or eat fish... thanks.

Not if you eat a balanced diet. There are other food sources for iron. Get yourself a good vegetarian cookbook for some pointers!

I have been a Veggie for over 5 years and I havent died yet.

Praise God, you have made a wise decision. Many have made the choice to abstain from flesh foods, and they are much healthier and feeling much better with a greater conscience than ever. A plant based diet was the diet chosen for our first parents in the garden in Eden by our loving Creator (read Gen 1 and 2), therefore, it is impossible for it to be bad for us. It was not until the flood came, that man was allowed to eat flesh foods upon certain conditions for you can not grow a garden in a flood (read Gen 7 to 9). Do not listen to the lie of the Devil, that tells us that we will be missing out on something that is needed if we abstain from flesh foods, I have known individuals, healthy individuals who have been vegetarians in every since of the word for decades. Sadly, much of the nutrients in plants have been depleted, therefore, it might be neccessary to take supplements now and again. Let God be your strength and you shall lack nothing.

Not if you eat correctly within your diet. Search on line for vegetables rich in iron (There are a few! (don't want to say which cause I 'm not 100% sure which ones :)) Check out some dietary sites or get help from a dietitian if you need it.

You can see a nutritionist it is the best advice to fit your dietary needs. It is a great idea. Until then, don't worry. The problem about being vegetarian is making sure you get high quality plant protien, and that you combine your foods to help your body absorb the iron you need. For example one combination is an old time favorite, a simple peanutbutter sandwich on whole grain bread. Also, the old stand-by of beans and rice offers complete high quality protien. A nutritionist can help you create an eating plan to keep you strong and healthy.

You shouldn't become anemic from being a vegetarian as long as you make sure you are supplementing what your body needs. I don't take iron pills because I don't need them. But if you naturally have a low blood count- you will need to speak with your doctor (blood tests can help), and s/he will be able to give you a good multivitamin to take. If you are worried you will need to take iron-try pre-natal vitamins. You can buy them over the counter now and they have a higher iron content for expecting mothers. Try taking regular supplements- you can buy vegetarian vitamins at GNC. If you feel like you have symptoms of anemia (www.webmd.com- you can look up symptoms), go to your doctor. I hope this helps! Also, make sure you are giving your child what she needs-make sure to see your pediatrician about that before you make any changes. Vegetarianism is much healthier for your child that eating meat, but you need to make sure that you are providing a balanced diet so that she gets proper nutrition.

i recently discovered that i am anemic...its not a deadly desease or anything. the absolute WORST thing that can happen is that you will faint. symptoms are tieredness, headaches,feeling like you are going to faint when you stand up to quick...

you will Not get anemia and die ..first the leading cause of anemia in women is menstruating (their period) sometimes you have excess blood loss.. ( my meat eating sister is anemic) second most women that are vegan do not develop anemia , seems odd that many meat eaters develop iron deficiency ..there is a lot of false information out there .. so many foods contain iron ..so if you eat healthy you will get plenty of iron and worse case scenario.. you take an iron pill (which should be taken simultaneously with Vitamin C. I have been a vegan 25 years , and a vegetarian 10 years prior ..have 2 adult sons ..vegan since birth who will out live most meat eaters and live healthier ..and know many other vegans ..all healthy as can be with no deficiencies..please do not let people scare you .. they are just uninformed on nutrition , have done little to no studies on the subject .. No you won't, just eat your vegetables and you can only improve your health with a veg diet. Only supplement I take is vitamin B12.

You won't become anemic if you are eating a healty varied diet. I have been vegetarian for 2 years and have not become anemic, I give blood every 3 months and never was told I am anemic(they test for anemia among other things)

Eat millet, quinoa or total cereal. You ain't gonna die. When you take iron rich foods, avoid calcium at the same meal as it inhibits absorption. Iron is absorbed better if you take it with vitamin C. I haven't had meat in 16 years. My iron is fine. Eat dark leafy green vegetables. Now, go in peace.

If you get enough iron, I would not worry about it.

PS: No vegetarian eats fish
