Try wheat gluten/seitan. It's delicious and fairly cheap to make. You can buy ready-made seitan in many health food stores and it's extremely similar in texture (and maybe taste) to meats like chicken, etc.. But you can also cook your own from wheat gluten flour. I have included a sources below for how to make seitan stew and some other sites as well. Here is a recipe for making basic seitan (Yum!)

Quick Homemade Gluten
(Makes 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 pounds or 2 to 2-1/2 cups)
This is the basic recipe for gluten.
2 cups gluten flour
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1-1/4 cups water or vegetable stock
3 Tablespoons lite tamari, Braggs liquid amino acids, or soy sauce
1-3 teaspoons toasted sesame oil (optional)
Add garlic powder and ginger to flour and stir. Mix liquids together and add to flour mixture all at once. Mix vigorously with a fork. When it forms a stiff dough knead it 10 to 15 times.
Let the dough rest 2 to 5 minutes, then knead it a few more times. Let it rest another 15 minutes before proceeding.
Cut gluten into 6 to 8 pieces and stretch into thin cutlets. Simmer in broth for 30 to 60 minutes.
Broth:
4 cups water
1/4 cup tamari or soy sauce
3-inch piece of kombu (a type of seaweed)
3-4 slices ginger (optional)
Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan. Bring broth to a boil. Add cutlets one at a time. Reduce heat to barely simmer when saucepan is covered. Seitan may be used, refrigerated, or frozen at this point.

Tofu is also comparable in price to buying meat and some claim it is cheaper but I'm not sure about that.
If you are vegan and don't mind eating eggs, then you can get your protein this way by, for example, making fried rice with egg in it. Use Bragg's amino acids to flavor your rice. It tastes a lot like soy sauce but is fairly healthy for you.
There are many other choices for vegetarians too...if I have time later then I'll come back and edit this posting, giving you some other ideas.
Good luck...you are doing the right thing!

Try maybe buying a fruit salad or regular salad already put together. They are good and only cost about $3 to $4.
eat an apple before every meal and anytime you feel hungry. Forget the fish - it's not vegetarian.
See if you can get access to bulk foods. Things like oatmeal, cereal, spaghetti, and beans are really cheap when bought in bulk. Also, the better the cook you are, the cheaper your food becomes. Almost half of what you are paying for when you buy processed foods is assembly. If it's really bad, check out charity organizations in your area, particularly Foods Not Bombs. Check out FnB even if you're filthy rich, they welcome everyone.
