Do doughnuts / donuts / timbits contain eggs?!

Question:

Do doughnuts / donuts / timbits contain eggs?

I am a lacto vegetarian - i take dairy products but not eggs or meat. I would like to know if all varieties of doughnuts / timbits contain eggs.

If not what are the varieties contain eggs and those that don't contain eggs.

Thanks in advance

Answers:
Yes, doughnuts dough/batter contains eggs.
All varieties... I'm not sure about that, but most brands you find in the supermarket bread aisle and doughtnut shops do.

Doughnuts are usually made from an enriched dough. Enriched here means added milk, eggs and oil. Not enriched as in adding vitamins.

You can try a local health food store or whole food store to see if they carry alternative brands.

usaully potatoes

i know but they seriously do

Most contain eggs.

Donuts and most pastries contain eggs in the batter they are made from. Even white bread contains eggs, you just have to read the label if you want to make sure that there are no eggs in the formula or recipe.

I'd say yes about the eggs. Probably all types. I'd call an owner-run doughnut shop and talk to the actual baker. He or she would be glad to clarify it for you.

yes most doughnuts have eggs, not very many recipes without them but here is one i did find

Doughnut Holes
1/2 ounce yeast
1/3 cup warm water
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour, plus 1/2 cup
1/4 cup cake flour, plus 1/4 cup
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 ounces cooked potato, peeled and riced
1/4 cup hot water
2 cups powdered sugar, for rolling

In a bowl combine yeast, warm water and sugar to dissolve. Add 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/4 cup cake flour. Stir and set in a warm place 30 minutes to foam up.

Add the powdered sugar, salt, potato, and hot water to the foamed yeast along with 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and 1/4 cup cake flour and mix on low to combine with a paddle. Mix on high-speed 30 seconds to combine. Add another 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and mix on high.

Flour the bench heavily and knead the dough gently (it may be sticky). Turn into a greased bowl and proof until doubled in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and punch down. In a bowl proof the dough another 30 minutes.

Flour surface heavily and pat dough out to about 1/2-inch thick. Cut out doughnut holes, flouring cutter each time, and set on a floured sheet pan.

Heat oil to 375 degrees F.

Drop doughnut holes in. Flip once and cook no more than 30 seconds. Drain on a paper towel lined sheet pan then soon after dredge in powdered sugar and toss.

Most do contain eggs but I know that some don't. You have to call the company and ask what variety don't contain eggs.

Most commercial doughnuts will contain eggs, some also contain lard so watch out for those.

Some local donut companies make vegan donuts, VooDoo Doughnuts is one in Portland, Or. They also sell donuts topped with bacon so I avoid them.

Mighty-O Donut based in Seattle makes vegan donuts which you can order by the case anywhere in the US. They're a bit pricey unless you order lots of cases (flat rate shipping.)

Sometimes whole foods will have a vegan cake donut individually in plastic. I forget who manufacturers those.

You can also order donuts online here:

As Tim Hortons use the Robin Hood cake and yeast doughnit mixes, there is egg powder in the mixes, eggs add lightness and flavour, so you would want to avoid them, Country Style, Muggs, Coffee Time and most small places in Canada do.

I should know I was a chef for 20 yrs all crossed Canada, and worked in bakeries as a lad and was responsible for making the doughnuts, scratch batter are to unpredictable, the mixes are always on.

I'm sure that the majority contain eggs.

Yes

Some Tim Hortons use lard and some use shortening.. it's best to ask them before you order! Same thing about eggs! Some eggs are in
some no eggs.. it's best to ask them before you order!
