Why is it vegetarian foods?!
Why is it vegetarian foods?
cost so much... if a person want to eat healthly it makes their food bill go up..the cost of fresh fruits is unreal.. 2.50 cent for a cantaloupe... 7 bucks for a water mellon.. and lets not for get how much it cost for salad items..it seems you can get all the junk food and meat cheaper.. they are always on sale.. but not the veggie ..

Its partly because the government gives subsidies to the meat industry but not to organic farmers. It costs more for a pint of fresh blueberries then it does for a pound of beef!! Yes, if you want to eat healthy organic foods, you are going to get hosed in the wallet. The government would rather you ate all of the nasty crap that they have approved, because the FDA has financial interests in the products they approve. Its all about the money, not the consumers best interest or health. I think the Food and Death (oops, meant drug) Administration is run by crackheads.
no clue :)
I don't know, but you're right.
I think it's because of the demand of junk food. It's kind of reversed in this case. Even though it's not healthy, due to may different competitions, each company is try to market their product by lower prices or having sales. Veggies, on the other case have no real competitor, and because not many people like it, it's safe in this case to have the price relatively high compared to the junk food or meat.
Hope that helped a little.
I'm in the u.k, and your absolutly right its the same here.
Beebs is on the money here /!\
the government subsidizes the meat industry, pushing a dietetic ideology. If it wasn't for the government meat would cost more then six times the price per pound.
They pay dairies to throw milk away to keep prices higher than they should be.
Processed veg*n food costs much, but if you buy fresh vegetables, fruit, flour, beans etc... and learn to cook you can save some serious cash and eat healthier. But some fruit that is not in season will cost more. Living on meat and cheese costs a lot more in my opinion than leading a healthy vegan lifestyle.
This is true for anything in life. You get what you pay for. When you may very little chances are what you get is going to be of poor quality. that's true for anything you want. Clothes, food, education..anything
Becuase the "cost" of food doesn't reflect the real cost of production.
E.G. The cost to the enviroment, the exploitation of workers, etc.
Also, the larger an industry is, the more efficient it becomes.
junk food has preservatives in it. it is more stable, although its of little nutrition.
Real food is highly persishable, and time consuming.
But in the long run, learning to cook at home will save you money.
It's not cheap to eat at McDonalds, and that stuff is almost all junk.
Of course you need to consider the cost to your health by eating junk food.
Blueberries and spinach may cost more money than Dorritos and hot dogs but the benefits from fresh fruits and veggies are priceless!!!

From 1985-2000, the cost of soft drinks rose 20% and of candy rose 46%. The cost of fruits and vegetables rose 117%.

The USDA Food Guide Pyramid available through 2005 recommended that meat, poultry, fish, and eggs comprise 14% of the diet, yet 52% of USDA food promotion resources were allocated to these foods. The Pyramid said 33% of the diet should come from fruits and vegetables ― which received only 5% of the USDA promotion budget.
