Question:

I live in the city....Is it recommended for me to eat only in season ....?

fruits and vegetables?....I heard that its better to eat local only then to eat whats brought into the stores....What about winter time ?

Answers:
Yes, only because it's fresher. In the winter, you have to eat imported produce. It's not bad for you. It's just slightly inferior to locally grown stuff in the summer.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably not that much better anyway. Besides, opinion on what's healthy and what is harmful changes more than my underwear.

When you eat the foods that grow in your region it is called..."macrobiotics".
I'm not sure how you do the winter. I'm sure if you research macrobiotics it will help you.

the thing is. fruit and vegetables ripen better, and taste better in season. winter tomatoes are like styrofoam, yuck. i don't know about the healthy bit. i guess it's better to eat fruits/ veggies that ripen right.... and oranges and other citrus are winter fruit, but they only grow in like, cali or florida.

I like that idea, but I live in the city too and it really is hard. I stick to organic and local vegs and fruit when possible, but the variety is so poor.

I dont know why they feel the need to import 20 kinds of apples and not sell our own when I see apple trees wherever I go.

I suggest that you email food markets, and let them know there is a demand for locally grown vegs, they should be aware of it.

I email companies quite often, asking about it, because in the end it is up to us consumers to change this situation. Unnecessary import of vegetables and fruit that can be found locally is plain wrong. Local resources are ignored for the silliest reasons. Ask them why and you will get the most confusing answers.

Yes, its better to eat local produce in season. The stuff in the grocery stores has been force grown with gasses and other wacky things, and is loaded with pesticide and fungucide residues. I grow as much of my own stuff as I can in an indoor hydroponic garden, so I can enjoy organic stuff year round. My friends are always amazed when I have fresh cucumbers in December in North Carolina! If you have limited space, you can grow in container gardens using grow lights. Its a fun hobby, and keeps me in year round groceries.

the general idea is that "out of season" fruits and vegetables is grown in the southern hemisphere and imported to this country and that "other" countries are using chemicals that are banned in this country, but the crazy thing is some farmers in this country are still using chemicals (illegally) that are banned. To avoid these chemicals, you should buy
"organic" fruits and vegetables. In winter time, your diet or
list of foods will change to what's still growing late in the
fall or early in the spring.
