What is the Buddhist Diet? And don't they live longer?
Answers:
If you look at the post to Wikipedia it gives reasonable information about it. Buddhist vegetarianism is closer to a vegan diet than ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, since eggs and dairy would rarely if ever be eaten. However, it depends on the sect as to whether they even practice vegetarianism.
If you are on some Asian airlines you can ask for Asian Vegetarian food which is different than Western Vegetarian food, it will likely be more vegan and not have the 5 pungent spices.
Whether you know it or not, Buddhists are one of the longest lived people in the world.
Perhaps you have heard of the G.I. Diet? Well, quite by chance Buddhists eat that kind of diet--natural foods like God gave us in Eden.
What is the G.I. diet about--it stands for glucose index.
That means transit time for sugar to pass from your mouth into your bloodstream.
When something like a soda with corn sweetener enters your mouth, it starts into your blood as fast as it hits your capillary bed under your tongue--wham, your blood sugar goes up. Insulin increases rapidly, the sugars enter the cells, and very rapidly the sugar drops in your blood outside the cells, and receptors on the cells close, trapping the sugar inside.
What happened to the rush of sugar? Because your metabolism can only burn a Little, IT TURN INTO FAT--UGH. And some people get dizzy from the resulting rapid low blood sugar level.
What to do. Eat like a Buddhist (or a horse)--natural foods, whole wheat bread, whole grain rice, lots of lintels, beans, vegetables, and salads. Use prepared fruit juices and soda pop in minimum amounts--drink more water (no sugar) and exercise as much as you can. Reduce consumption of flesh foods--they are involved with cancer. And take your problems to the one who loves you so much He suffered your penalty.
There is a diet that identifies foods that kill tissue. Try www.revelado.org/clever-diet.h...

This information is available on wikipedia re: what Buddhists eat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/buddhist_cu... You can do more research yourself (as I just did) to find out more information. Just search on "buddhist diet" (no quotes) and you'll find a lot of references.
As for longevity, a quick search didn't turn up anything but it's certainly possible. Put your search engine to work and see what you find. ?
There is no such thing as Buddhist Diet as I know.. I'm a Buddhist. All I can say is this. We Buddhist don't kill animals or don't hurt animals (including humans). So eating meat is taken as bad and wrong thing. So a Good Buddhist is a Vegetarian. As the modern Science's finding a Vegetarian life style is better and will make you live long. Buddha's teachings (2500 years ago) is way beyond our understanding..
Apparently the 7th-Day Adventist types live much longer than most in North America and I believe they have a predominately vegetarian diet.
Also, National Geographic did a feature and those from Sardinia also live long but they are meat eaters, so that blows that theory.
What was common in both of these communities was living off the land and warm weather, therefore making it easier to live off the land.
I guessing the family tree in both of these communities is fairly linear compared to most so genetics may play a huge role in their longevity.
