Are margarine and salad dressing dairy products?!
Are margarine and salad dressing dairy products?
I'm trying to go vegan, but i love eating toast with margarine and salads with dressing, or a veggie mix with a dip. are those dairy products? if so, are there any kinds of substitutes that i could use?
Answers:
You can fairly easily find margerines that contain no dariy, you just have to spend some time at your grocery store reading ingredients, and maybe learn what some of those unrecognizeable ingredients are
Mine is Smart Balance LIte. Completely vegan as far as I know, tastes just like most margerines, and pretty healthy in what kinds of fats it uses. Make sure to get the LITE. I can't vouch for the regular. It might have whey and/or bad fats.
Your best bet for a store-bought non-dairy salad dressing is Italian or vinagarette. If you read the ingredients closely, you should be able to find one that has no cheese (the most common dairy ingredient that some Italian dressings have snuck into them.) Thousand Island and Ranch are made from a mayonaise base (highly dairy). Blue Cheese obviously is dairy as well. Not sure about French or Russian or Catalina. I'll have to look next time I'm at the store.
You could find some homemade vegan recipies if you look hard enough.
You know by the dressings there's always some dry mixes for ranch that you make yourself? I THINK there's some dairy ingredient in the mix itself, but you can check. If there's no dairy ingredient in the mix, you can mix it with vegan mayo or fake sour cream, instead of the real thing. It will taste good.
For a veggie mix dip, try Lipton ONioin soup mix (Check ingredients before buying, but I think it's vegan.) mixed with your favorite vegan sour cream recipie.
yes!! Thumbs up to the answerer who suggested Hummus as an alternative dip!! my favorite is Roasted Red Pepper. Can you say YUM??
if you are a pure vegan, you would not eat anything that has animal ingrediants even if it is miniscule.
dressing has milk in it, milk is from cows.
check the ingrediants, you know what is dairy, eggs, anything that is mixed with milk, and animal meat.
margarine however is all chemical, I believe, it may have some kind of animal fat.
check the ingredients and if you are not sure, just put the name of the ingredients in the search window and see what turns up.
Margarine is primarily made of vegetable oils and water.
Some salad dressings contain cheese and/or milk/cream
you have to read labels.
since many dips are made w/sour cream, you might check out hummus as a substitute
margarine comes from oil. Salad dressing may, you have to read the ingredients. Use basalmic vinegar and oil. Or lemon...
check lables for dairy content all labels will say these days margarine is a dairy product but u can gat soya margarine which is suitible
Do vegans really not eat dairy? I thought the only difference was the didn't eat fish. Huh, you live and learn, eh?
Many margarines and dressings have dairy products in them. Check the ingredients for words like
Casein - milk protein
Whey - derived from dairy, during cheese making process.
dairy solids
powdered milk, or egg
albumen - egg product
lactose - milk sugar
natural and artificial flavorings (could be anything).
For margarine look for Earth Balance or Smart Balance
and use oil based dressings. Look for dressing recipes online, there are some good ones out there, and easy to make. Bean dips are fantastic also, hummus is typically vegetarian.
Good luck!!!
margarine is fine, salad dressings that are oil based are most likely fine, but if it's creamy, then it probably has some sort of milk or cream in it....read the ingredients.
Margarine - oils and preservatives (check for milk products on the list)
Salad Dressing - oils, spices, herbs, and preservatives (check for milk products on the list)
You would need to read the ingredients to know for sure. Industry has a clever way of hiding animal products under odd names. Cassien and whey, for example are milk based. If you dont know what an ingredient is, google it. Most cream based salad dressing are milk based. I make all of my dressing homemade, just to be sure. There are vegan options available at most whole foods or health food stores. Good luck!
Yes a lot of margarines have dairy in them, and a lot of salad dressings have dairy in them, You'll have to get into the habit of reading the ingredient labels (be on the look out for "hidden ingredients")

They make Vegan margarine that is very good, I think Earth Balance/ Soy Garden is the best out there, Here is the link:

As for salad dressings, just check the ingredients. Personally, I try to stay away from that bottled crap, try putting a little bit of olive oil, some lemon juice, some salt and some pepper on your salad... It is really good. In fact, I'd put it on anything.
And for dips... like Ranch dip, If that is what you mean, I have never found a vegan ranch dip (Unless you buy some special vegan brand, I guess) but I don't know. If you want to make a dip from scratch, then it is simple... They make sour cream/ mayonnaise/ and cream cheese substitutes... So just exchange the dairy products with a vegan substitute:
Sour cream:
Tofutti Sour supreme
Cream Cheese:
Tofutti Better than cream cheese
http://www.tofutti.com/index.asp... (I have tried both and thought they were great)
Mayonnaise:
Nasoya Nayonaise

Good Luck with becoming a vegan, and I hope this helped.
Margarine has sometimes gelatin in it. The best margarine alternative is Earth Balance. Mayonnaise has eggs in it so that is a big No No. You can buy Vegenaise by the company follow your heart or Nayonnaise which are both Vegan friendly, found at health food stores or whole foods. Not all dressing has dairy in them. Some have eggs so beware. Make your own dressing or when you buy read the engredients. You can dip your veggies in peanut sauce or hummus. When you become vegetarian, vegan it is all about getting to know products and checking ingredients and after a while you just know what to buy.
Margarine is generally made from vegetable oils and so not dairy. As far as salad dressings, anything creamy, like ranch, is dairy and most likely has a mayonnaise base thus eggs are an ingredient. Try an Italian or make your own using vegan sour cream or soft tofu and some almond milk, add some herbs and spices and you have a great vegan dressing. At our restaurant we have many nut based vegan dressings as well.
There are plenty of salad dressings that are vegan, but most of them are not the type one would normally think of for dipping vegetables (that is, until you become vegan, and then you get creative). I'd probably just try to make my own.
SmartBalance makes a really good, non-dairy spread that tastes just like butter (to me, anyway).
It depends. Many margarines are dairy-free, but some do contain dairy. A few even contain gelatin (mostly the "spread" types). It's one of the many things where you really have to check the label to be sure.
Salad dressing, again, depends on which dressing. There are certain vinagarrettes, etc. that do not have dairy. I would imagine all of the "creamy" ones (Ranch, thousand island, etc) probably do contain milk ingredients.
In both cases, there are vegan varieties available (even when not sold as such), but you have to look closely at the labels.
most of them are...try to see if you can get vegan margarine...yes there IS such a thing
i know ranch has milk and eggs in it...so stay away from that
get the vinegar-based salad dressings
